The Nassau County Department of Health is seeking a Chemist III for our Environmental Health Lab who will perform and supervise both routine and complex qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis and examination of a variety of substances and materials; monitor standards of performance and validity of analyses performed to ensure that quality control criteria are met, and that produced data is reliable; Develop, evaluate, and implement new methods, procedures, and quality control standards; Conduct testing of samples of a complex or atypical nature or known problem cases; Supervise and perform calibrations of equipment, prepares standard calibrations, and assists subordinate personnel with troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment
Candidates must exhibit: A thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of organic and analytical chemistry, a thorough knowledge of general laboratory principles and practices, including the methods, materials and techniques used in the laboratory analysis of a variety of substances and materials, a thorough knowledge of the indicators, sources, and legal limits of water pollutants, a knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, rules and regulations pertaining to public health, an ability to organize and direct the activities of professional, technical, and clerical staff, an ability to analyze and evaluate data, and to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports, ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a major in Chemical, Environmental, Physical, or Biologic Sciences, including or supplemented by at least 24 credit hours in Chemistry, including Organic Chemistry and 4 years of satisfactory professional experience in air, effluent, soil, wastewater or drinking water analysis.
