Job Purpose:

This position performs routine skilled and technical support work in the inspection, repair and maintenance of transmission and distribution substation electrical equipment.

This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions. Occasionally work is performed near moving mechanical parts in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, ambient air, temperature extremes, fumes and airborne particulates, traffic, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock hazard, noise pollution, and vibration.

Responsibilities

  • Receive job assignment from supervisor/manager
  • Plan travel/hotel as needed following NASS guidelines
  • Travel to hotel near job site on Sunday
  • Travel to job site Monday morning
  • Perform pre-job safety meeting
  • Perform stretch and flex
  • Walk site and inspect area to be worked
  • Drop stainless steel tags (small round metal tags) with crew
  • Install tags using stainless steel cable ties with tension tool (lots of bending and working on your knees)
  • Call out tag number and substation structure info to be recorded in Excel spreadsheet.
  • Setup test set in area to be tested (work is typically directly next to or below energized structures or 500,000 volts or less)
  • Test grounds (1 person operates test set and enters data in laptop, 1 person wears class 2 rubber gloves and “drags” the lead making connections and takings current measurements with clampmeter, and sometimes a 3rd person will assist with moving the lead and cleaning grounds)
  • Pack up test set carefully
  • Repeat setup and test if time permits

Qualifications

Testing Related

  • Able to Bend, squat, kneel repeatedly (average 250 times per day when testing)
  • Verbal Communication: must be able to speak loud and clear enough to be understood without introducing errors in test data or creating safety concerns due to communication when testing with energized lead.
  • Written Communication: must be legible enough so that others can read it without difficulty to avoid errors in test reports
  • Spreadsheet (MS Excel): Bacis skills required. Able to enter test data in Excel spreadsheet without errors.
  • Able to operate test equipment and communicate using hands-free phone or walkie talkie.
  • Able to “drag the lead”, perform current measurements, and communicate via hands-free or walkie-talkie while wearing Class 2 rubber gloves.
  • Must have HIGH attention to details when performing job duties: tagging, testing, recording data, mapping, etc.

Repair Related (are a plus for our repair work but NOT required for testing)

  • Able to excavate and repair ground grid using shovel, rake, and other hand tools
  • Able to operate mini excavator to carefully expose existing grounds in an energized substation environment.
  • Able to operate skid loader to carry, spread, and smooth spoils, gravel, or crush and run in an energized substation environment.
  • Able to operate a rammer (jumping jack) to compact soil/gravel as required
  • Able to perform cadweld repairs of in-ground grid connections.

General Everyday Requirements:

  • Able to WORK outside in all weather: HOT and COLD and everything in between (normally don’t work in rain)
  • Able to use onsite Porta John for restroom needs (work is not in an office environment)
  • Available to work 40 to 50 hours a week plus additional travel time
  • Able to work away from home for 1-4 weeks at a time as required by job/customer (normal schedule is travel Sunday, work Monday-Thursday, travel home Friday)
  • Asset management: Take care of equipment (vehicles, tools, test instruments, safety gear, etc.)
  • Be responsible with time reporting and spending on the company credit card
  • Follow ALL Safety rules required by NASS, Customers, and Federal/State/Local Government, etc.
  • Wear PPE at all times on the job site: including hard hat, safety glasses, 100% FR Clothing w long sleeves, hi Vis reflective vest (when needed), EH rated safety toe boots, gloves
  • Housekeeping: help keep vehicles and job site clean, neat, and organized
  • Conduct: be professional around customers; be respectful to fellow crew members, supervisor, management, safety team, HR, etc.
  • Willing to follow instructions and perform tasks as directed by crew leader, supervisor, etc.
  • Willing to be flexible with job schedules, locations, and work assignments
