  • Be detail-oriented, well organized, and self-motivated with the ability to work under tight deadlines and structure.
DESCRIPTION
The Guidance Counselor provides direct and indirect services to 5th through 8th grade students of the NCS Lower and Middle Schools. Direct services include but are not limited to, school counseling core curriculum, individual counseling and student planning, classroom lessons, small group counseling, and preventative and responsive services. Indirect services on behalf of students include, but are not limited to, referrals for additional assistance and consultation/collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to create a learning environment promoting educational equity, access, and success for every student.
This role reports directly to the Head of Middle School with added instruction from the Head of Lower School and will perform additional tasks as directed by the administration, such as but not limited to Awards Days, 8th Grade Renewal, Preview Days, the auction, social media accounts, and orientations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement a data-driven, comprehensive school counseling program for all students to address barriers to student learning and to close the achievement/ opportunity gap.
  • Deliver programs that promote students’ development of essential mindsets and behavior standards, including, but not limited to, executive functioning skills, learning skills, social skills, self-management skills, and college/career readiness skills.
  • Review and disaggregate student achievement, attendance, and behavior data to identify and implement interventions with current knowledge of promotion, retention, and graduation requirements.
  • Use school data to identify and assist individual students who do not perform at grade level and do not have opportunities and resources to be successful in school.
  • Create yearly, data-driven goals that advance student outcomes in areas of academic, social/emotional, and college/career development.
  • Uses the skills of leadership, advocacy and collaboration to create systemic change to improve the academic, social/emotional, and post-graduate success of all students.
  • Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Implement an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
  • Assist administration in situations including conflict resolution and disciplinary matters.
  • Work with the counseling department to develop and execute Parent Education initiatives.
MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELING
  • Handle all counseling needs in middle school in grades 6-8.
  • Plans/implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals (bullying, internet safety, etc.)
  • Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Conduct classroom guidance sessions related to relationship/bullying/academics, etc., during Bible or SOAR.
  • Attend middle school lunch for check-ins and to build relationships and offer lunch groups as needed.
  • Assist administration in coordinating and communicating House System events to teachers and students in the middle school.
  • Work with administration to provide support when necessary.
LOWER SCHOOL COUNSELING
  • Assist in lower school counseling.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Implement guidance curriculum and teach regularly scheduled guidance classes.
  • This will include working with the 5th grade as well as assisting another counselor for 4th grade.
  • Work with administration to provide support when necessary.
TESTING COORDINATOR FOR GRADES K - 8
  • Order and prep testing;
  • Administrate benchmark and summative testing;
  • Troubleshoot and support teachers in finding resources to support test preparation; and
  • Analyze and communicate data for trends by subject, grade level, and class.
GRADE REPORTING, RECORDS, AND SCHEDULING FOR GRADES K - 8
  • Training and FACTS expert;
  • Communicate progress reports;
  • Review report cards to verify completion;
  • Prepare and manage report cards;
  • Creation and management of cumulative files;
  • Follow the Processing of Records document for setting up files for new students;
  • Work with administration on student schedules;
  • Work with the Admissions Department to screen and onboard prospective students; and
  • Work with the Admissions Department on the withdrawal of students.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and counseling or be working towards completion (preferred).
  • Meet the state certification/licensure standards.
  • Experience in an independent school setting is preferred but not required.
  • Proficient writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong teamwork skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work under pressure.
SCHEDULE
This is the equivalent of a full-time exempt position which works Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM with a one-hour lunch break as commensurate with hours the school is open. Time-off shall coincide with the NCS teacher schedule with school holidays and a modified 10-week summer work schedule as determined by the Head of School.
