Napa Valley College is Hiring a Police Officer Trainee Near Napa, CA

Napa Valley College (NVC) is seeking a Police Officer Trainee for the College Police Department. The Napa Valley College Police Department is a proactive, professional, public safety organization that prides itself on its interaction and support of the campus community. The department practices a philosophy that strongly emphasizes a problem-solving approach and engagement with the diverse campus community. We are dedicated to making Napa Valley College a safe environment to learn and work. College Police Officers are responsible for a variety of law enforcement activities, involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and regulations, prevention and investigation of crimes, and maintenance of order during an assigned shift. The incumbent in this position will perform a variety of entry-level police support duties in a learning capacity; assist and observe Police Officers and civilian police personnel; attend Police Academy to obtain a POST Academy Certificate of Completion; and perform related work which may require public contact but not as a sworn police officer. The trainee will attend the Santa Rosa Junior College Police Academy, costs for which will be covered by the college. Upon successful completion of the Police Academy, the trainee will be sworn in as a sworn Peace Officer. The position reports to the Chief of Police.
 
The positions are full-time, 12-months-per-year, classified positions which will be occupied until successful completion of the POST certified police academy. In the event that the employees separate from the college prior to serving three years in the Police Officer position, they will be required to reimburse the District all or part of the Police Academy fees. Persons employed in this class must be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays, and/or rotating shifts. The salary has an appropriate placement at range 23 of the current Classified Salary Schedule. This starting salary range is $5,333 to $6,173/month, with future steps up to $7,502/month. Upon satisfactory completion of the police academy, the trainee will be sworn in as a Police Officer. Placement is made based on experience. The college offers a fringe benefit package including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and public employee retirement system membership.The position is a non-sworn, training classification to be used while incumbent is attending a certified Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Police Academy. The POST approved police academy, as described in and required by Section 832 of California Penal Code, consists of intensive instruction on law enforcement procedures combined with rigorous physical fitness training.
 
In addition to attending the Police Academy to gain training and proficiency in law enforcement terminology, concepts, and techniques and to gain the requisite knowledge to be eligible to perform the duties of a sworn peace officer, candidates may perform the duties identified below:

 
  • Work with officers to observe and learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques; 
  • Operate police information equipment, including computer systems, radios and telephones to enter and research information at the direction of an Officer or police civilian; 
  • Assist in processing, packaging, labeling, storing and destroying property and evidence; 
  • May provide assistance with photocopies, files, indexes and locating police records and related paperwork; 
  • Support activities for the department which could include transporting documentation to appropriate public offices; and 
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications 
 
 Knowledge of: 
  • Correct English usage, vocabulary, and spelling sufficient to complete POST certified police academy.
Ability to: 
 
  • Work independently with the ability to handle multiple projects and establish priorities;
  • Prepare clear and precise written reports;
  • Understand and carry out directions;
  • Interpret and apply Federal, state, local and college laws and regulations;
  • Analyze a situation quickly and accurately and adopt an effective course of action;
  • Exhibit responsibility, personal integrity, and honesty.
 
 Other: 
 
Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students. 
 
 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 
 1. Must meet the following minimum standards as set forth in Government Code Section 1031:
a. Be a citizen of the United States (1031[a]) or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and applied for citizenship (1031.5). 
b. Be at least 21 years old by completion of the police academy. 
c. Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record. 
d. Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation. 
e. Be a high school graduate or possess a GED. 
f. Be found free of physical or emotional conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of peace officer authority as determined by a pre-employment physical and psychological examination administered by an appropriate licensed physician.
2) In order to advance to Peace Officer status, must successfully complete the basic police academy and field training program.
3) Possess an appropriate driver’s license valid in the state of California.
 
Special Qualifications: Persons employed in this class must be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays, and/or rotating shifts. Physical Standards: Applicants must be capable of performing all essential tasks without adverse impact on job performance; ability to pass the POST Physical Ability test; vision must be corrected to 20/30; must be free from color blindness and have a normal field of vision; must have normal hearing acuity.

SELECTION PROCESS
Examinations may consist of any or all of the following: application appraisal, written objective examination, and/or POST Physical Ability Test. Candidates placed on the eligibility list must submit to and pass POST approved background investigation. Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must complete and pass a peace officer psychological evaluation and physical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.
 
Title 8, USC, Section 1324-A requires verification of eligibility for employment in the United States.
