Position Title: Choir Teacher

Department: Certified Teacher

Reports To: Middle School Principal

Location: Middle School


SUMMARY:
To provide students with an appreciation for music, a background in tone production, music reading, music writing, artistic expression, an opportunity for performance, and to provide a well-rounded experience in choir.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare for assigned classes
  • Design lessons with an appropriate level of difficulty that provide content in a logical and sequential manner
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the classroom and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Identify pupil needs and provide instruction appropriate to those needs
  • Analyze and interpret student data to develop and modify instructional activities
  • Follow modifications and accommodations as specified in Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Implement the Idaho Core Standards, as well as the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives in lesson plans, classroom instruction, unit planning, and assessments
  • Devise written and oral assignments and tests that require analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts and use them to evaluate student progress on a regular basis
  • Prepare students academically for any district, state, and federal testing in the subject area of Music
  • Display command of the subject matter
  • Budget class time effectively
  • Encourage students to strive to meet their highest potential
  • Establish and communicate classroom rules, and encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Rehearse students daily for performances
  • Organize a minimum of 1 concert per quarter and spring festival for choirs
  • Arrange for and set up any sound reinforcement for each concert by renting or borrowing
  • Create programs and make sufficient copies for each performance
  • Order and maintain uniforms for each student
  • Organize various fundraisers for choir(s)
  • Write or arrange music for performances
  • Maintain instruments
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings
  • Attend IEP meetings and collaborate with special education teachers as needed
  • Keep immediate supervisor informed of activities and any issues that may arise
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, curriculum, objectives, and methods
  • Provide needed and requested information on a timely and effective basis
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by federal and state law, administrative rules, and Board policy
  • Input data in a timely fashion
  • Assume responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development by attendance at professional meetings, membership in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses, and by reading professional journals and other publications
  • Adhere to The Code of Ethics of the Idaho Teaching Profession adopted by the Professional Standards Commission and the State Board of Education
  • Seek assistance should emergencies arise
  • Represent the school district in a positive manner
  • Know and follow school district policy and chain of command
  • Perform other duties as assigned


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
: None


EDUCATION AND OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Idaho standard secondary certificate with an endorsement in music required
  • Highly Qualified Teacher per the standards set forth by Nampa School District, required
  • Bachelor degree required in area of major study
  • Prior experience as a music teacher preferred

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance, instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students and/or employees of the district.


PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS:
Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding instructional practice and discipline.


PRODUCTIVITY/EFFICIENCY SKILLS:
Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary; organize job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete varied assignments within established time frame.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to conduct basic math functions and manipulate formulas in spreadsheets as needed.


REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form. Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit; walk and stand and reach with hands and arms; occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds. May be required to block or redirect students during negative behavior. Be able to effectively supervise and support staff when consequences are implemented, including supervising physical restraint and seclusion if necessary for safety.
