NAIS is Hiring a Content Editor Near Washington, DC

Description
The Content Editor supports the planning, development, and creation of NAIS content, including the association's magazine and affiliated blog. The Content Editor works to integrate and ensure synergy between NAIS's print magazine and blog, as well as develop other related content properties, and helps ensure that all content aligns to and reflects the organization's strategic priorities.
Responsibilities
  • Produce and edit educational, inspirational, and promotional content for the organization
  • Work as part of the editorial team to develop an ongoing editorial calendar for magazine and blog, identifying cross-promotional and complementary content ideas for blog and magazine as well as other NAIS content channels
  • With oversight from the Editorial Director, implement, maintain, and refine strategy for blog content creation and promotion
  • Create weekly blog content, which includes generating and reviewing ideas and submissions; nurturing, identifying, and recruiting writers; substantive and copy editing articles/posts; ensuring consistency of tone and style
  • Maintain blog, which includes scheduling and posting content in the content management system (CMS); tracking web analytics, traffic, and metrics to identify best practices; and developing ideas and copy for blog promotion and distribution via internal and external channels
  • Serve as a key member of the Independent School magazine team and contribute to magazine development and production
  • Develop issue-specific content, which includes reviewing ideas and submissions, substantive editing, proofing, and writing as needed, as well as communicating with authors
  • Post content and images from each issue in the CMS; modify and update content as needed on an ongoing basis
  • Manage submissions process (manuscripts, pitches), including responding to queries and maintaining and updating submissions tracking sheet/database
  • Perform administrative duties as needed, including maintenance of author agreements and copyright and reprint permissions solicitations, and responding to relevant, content-related member inquiries
  • Contribute to other content initiatives as needs and opportunities arise
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with experts and potential writers in the independent school community, including internal staff, as well as the education community at large

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, journalism, or related field
  • 5 or more years' relevant work experience with advanced editing, writing, and proofreading skills; must possess superior attention to detail
  • Knowledge of SEO and website analytics
  • Strategic thinking and initiative in planning for a variety of content channels and formats
  • Skilled in fostering collaboration and consensus-building; able to seek input from others, help others achieve goals, and show consideration and respect for individual differences
  • Ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances and expectations
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and as part of a team and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of independent schools preferred
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google products; able to work in a CMS, and adapt and learn new software and web-based systems
