General Description:

The Plant Controller ensures that the plant meets financial, logistical, and operational objectives by providing support as well as strategic and financial analysis. Responsible for directly supervising the accountant and purchasing/logistics manager and all their responsibilities. Plant controller is also responsible for including but not limited to payroll, benefits, AP, AR, energy, logistics (incoming and outgoing freight), material/supply contracts, purchasing, precious metal inventories, taxes, benefits support, IT resource support, and inventories.

  • Must have the ability & willingness to perform at the expected level of attendance at MW/MB; to work every day, on time, as scheduled.
  • Promote and maintain MW/MB safety goals and ensure a safe work environment for all employees. Leads safety and housekeeping efforts and corrective actions within assigned projects and areas. Exemplifies safety in all actions and leads by example
  • Financial advisor and point of contact for General Manager, Operations Committee, and Ownership.
  • Analyzes operations performance versus budget and estimates; communicates variances to the management team. Prepares operational and business analyses and makes improvement recommendations.
  • Partners with plant operations to evaluate the financial viability of initiatives and improvements.
  • Develops and conducts financial evaluations (ROI, NPV, regression analysis, etc) to ensure proper evaluation of capital proposals and other operational expenses and programs ensuring effective use of capital and operating funds.
  • Prepares annual budget and estimates, including review and authorization of material pricing, and usage, energy, labor, overhead, and capital spending. Updates as needed.
  • Prepares and presents monthly financial reports including operational performance and financials. Closes by required deadlines.
  • Negotiates, reviews, and secures supply contracts including but not limited to energy, freight, raw materials, chemicals, supplies, and equipment. Works with vendors to achieve favorable credit and payment terms.
  • Responsible for payroll, AP, and AR.
  • Responsible for purchasing and logistics.
  • Works with outside consultant to secure all insurance products including property, workers comp, liability, shipping, payroll, etc.
  • Reviews and ensures payment of all required taxes including property, sales, etc.
  • Works with independent public accounting firm for performance of annual external financial statement audits and filling of tax returns.
  • Plant IT coordinator; participates in IT budget process; manages hardware and software for front office and primary contact for external IT support and needs.
  • Maintains lists of plant capital projects and key documents and contracts.
  • Regular participation in operational meetings as well as meetings with Operating Committee and Owners. Presents information as required.

Beneficial Experience and Skills:

  • Five or more years of experience, in a controller and leadership role.
  • Able to work within timelines.
  • Able to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, etc).
  • Strong problem solving, negotiating, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong knowledge of standard cost system, cost analysis, and general accounting procedures and controls.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and supply chain.

Training Requirements:

§ All training necessary to stay current in the areas of accounting, finance, budgeting, etc. as well as all required plant training.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee on a daily basis to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Occasionally lifts, carries, or otherwise moves objects up to 20 pounds or less.
  • Regularly bends, stoops, stretches, and reaches to stock office supplies etc.
  • Frequently moves about the facility to survey plant and associates.
  • Regularly operates computer and other office equipment.
  • Occasionally attends meetings away from the office.

PPE Requirements:

§ No PPE required unless working out of the office area.

§ In plant area, all required PPE including safety shoes, safety glasses with side shields, hearing protections, high visibility vest, etc.

Education Requirements:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field (such as business or economics) plus 10 years of relevant experience with knowledge of financial analysis techniques and accounting principles and procedures
  • A Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license or other certification is preferred.
