Description

The Emergency Medical Technician primary responsibility is to assess injuries, administer emergency medical care, and transport injured or sick persons to medical facilities. The Emergency Medical Technician through recognized standards of care, continuing education, system developed standard operating procedures and compliance to medically sound policies and procedures, will assess the scene, accurately interrogate and asses the patient, as well as, provide the demanded standard of professional care. The Emergency Medical Technician plays a key role in providing basic life support for patients who demand live saving attention. The EMT must keep in mind that not all perceived emergencies are life threating and must be able to deliver the same quality care to these patients as well.

Responsibilities:

  • Be prepared to respond to calls for assistance by doing the prescribed pre-call preparations.
  • Respond to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured; transport the patient to a medical facility.
  • After receiving the call from the Telecommunications Center, drives the ambulance to the address or location given using the most expeditious route as dictated by traffic and or weather conditions.
  • Observes all traffic ordinances and regulations concerning emergency vehicle operations.
  • Upon arrival at the scene parks the ambulance in a safe location.
  • In the absence of the police, fire, or other officials, helps to create a safe traffic environment. This would include placing road flares, removing debris, and redirecting traffic to protect both injured and the crew.
  • Determine the nature and extent of illness and injury. If there is more than one injury or patient, establishes which should be treated first, renders emergency care as dictated by the illness or injury.
  • Reassures patients and bystanders by working confidently and efficiently. Avoids mishandling and carelessness while working as quickly as is safe. Looks for medical identification emblem as a clue in providing emergency care.
  • Where patients must be gotten out of entrapment, assesses the extent of injury; gives all possible emergency care and protection to the trapped patient; and uses the prescribed techniques and appliances for removing the patient safely. Radios the Telecommunications Center for additional help or special rescue or utility services if they are needed. After the patients are freed, provides additional care in sorting and treating the injured in accordance with standard emergency procedures. Maintains medical control of the patient throughout all aspects of patient care.
  • Complies with regulations on the handling of the deceased, notifies authorities, and arranges for protection of property and evidence of the scene.
  • Assists in the lifting of the stretcher, placing it in the ambulance and seeing that the patient and stretcher are secured and the emergency care is continued.
  • After determining the condition of the patient and the extent of the injuries or illness and knowing the relative locations and staffing of emergency hospital facilities decides which facility will be the most appropriate for treatment, unless otherwise directed by a supervisor or physician. To assure prompt medical care on delivery, reports directly to the emergency department or medical control center the nature and extent of injuries or illness, the number of patients being transported, and the destination. For the serious cases, may ask the physician for additional advice. Patient preference of facility is given priority unless contraindicated by patient condition.
  • Constantly observes patient enroute to emergency facility. Administers additional care as indicated or directed by physician.
  • Identifies diagnostic signs that may require radio communications with a medical facility for care enroute and that may require special professional services and or to have assistance available prior to or immediately on arrival at the medical facility.
  • Reports verbally and in writing what injuries or illness were identified. Also report what patient care was administered both at the emergency scene and in transit. This report is made to the emergency department staff for diagnostic purpose and for the record; a copy is filed with the Emergency Medical Service official records. Upon request, assists the emergency department staff.
  • After each trip, replaces used linens, blankets, and other supplies; send supplies for sterilization; and checks all equipment carefully so that the ambulance is ready for the next call.
  • Ensures that the ambulance is kept clean and tidy. In accordance with the local or state regulations, decontaminated the vehicles interior after it has transported a victim who had a contagious infection, was exposed to radiation, or has seeping body fluids.
  • Performs other situation functions as directed by the corporate Standard Operating Procedures or a supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school or equivalent required.
  • A PA Department of Health/Transportation approved training course curriculum for Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Valid PA Driver License
  • A current Basic Cardiac Life Support Healthcare Providers Course.
  • Within one year of employment must complete and Infectious Control Program.
  • A state certified Emergency Vehicle Operation Course with curriculum approved by the state.
  • Yearly Hazardous Materials Course.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age as mandated by PA State Vehicle codes.
  • Complete continuing education requirements as stated by the corporation.
  • Must maintain a Department of Health EMT status or advance to a state recognized higher level.
  • Ability to read and write English proficiently.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Ability to hear spoken information from co-workers, patients, physicians and dispatchers and sounds common to the emergency scene.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to verbally interview patient, family members and bystanders and hear their responses.
  • Ability to document in writing all relevant information in a prescribed format.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to control the scene. Ability to lift, carry and balance a minimum of 125 pounds equally distributed (250 pounds with assistance) a height of 33 inches and a distance of 10 feet.
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skill to perform all tasks related to quality patient care.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Meet minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Ability to function in varied environmental conditions such as lighted or darkened work areas, extreme heat, cold or moisture.
