JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Instructor – Muskegon Area ISD Career Tech Center

CLASSIFICATION: Professional

REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal of the Career Tech Center

SUPERVISES: Assigned classroom staff

TERMS:

This position is a 184 total paid days position offering full family subscriber medical, dental, and vision benefits. Dental, vision, and life insurance are paid by the district at no cost to the employee. Personal business days, holidays and sick time paid. Retirement through the Office of Retirement Services (Pension Plus or Defined Contribution).

SALARY RANGE:

This positions salary is based on the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center Education
Association Contract. Base BA Step 1 $47,477.0563 – MA Top Step 22 $85,152.8146, depending on experience and education

GENERAL JOB FUNCTION:

Career Tech Center instructors provide direct instructional programming for students, manage classroom activities and behaviors, integrate classroom instruction with employment related activities and maintain open communications with students, families, and other education professionals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in education or a relevant vocational specialty area.

2. Possession of a valid Interim Occupational Certificate or Occupational Education

Certificate in CIP Code area with appropriate industry licensure.

3. If no Occupational Certificate, 4,000 hours of paid recent and relevant work experience in related field (within last 6 years), and appropriate licensure.

4. Prefer valid Michigan Professional/Provisional Teacher Certification in related field.

5. Communication, organizational and networking skills required.

6. Excellent organizational skills, technology skills, communication skills and be detail and team oriented.

7. Experience working with high school age students and diverse student populations preferred.

8. A working knowledge of current practices and trends in the field of Career and

Technical Education.

9. An ability to supervise and manage the implementation of programs/services developed for students.

10. No physical or mental restrictions that would, with reasonable accommodation, prevent performance of the essential job functions and responsibilities.
11. Planning/Organizational Skills – Instructors must plan and organize their daily classroom and worksite activities to achieve the individual goals established for their students.

12. Decision Making Abilities – Instructors must make frequent and suitable decisions regarding classroom activities, student performance, instructional strategies, etc. on a daily basis.

13. Interpersonal Skills – It is imperative that instructors interact well and maintain rapport with parents, support staff, and colleagues.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Successful experience as an instructor of secondary students in a vocational education setting.

2. Successful experience in the development of work-based work sites within the business community.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Delivers relevant classroom and lab/workplace instruction using competency-based and outcome-based education techniques and strategies.

2. Works closely with area employers and advisory committee(s) to develop pertinent course content and to maintain overall program credibility.

3. Develops work-based learning sites for students.

4. Assesses student progress using a variety of techniques and testing instruments.

5. Maintains an appropriate level of two-way communication with parents and students.

Keeps parents informed and interested in classroom and workplace activities and accomplishments. Conducts parent/teacher conferences and works with parents in the resolution of problems.

6. Works cooperatively with counselors, career specialists, business partners, and other professionals to create opportunities for students.

7. Maintains accurate and legally adequate data keeping systems and student records.

8. Assists in the development of program budgets and monitors budget utilization.

9. Attends all required meetings and participates in all activities essential to program operations and Michigan Department of Education program requirements.

10. Supervises and evaluates assigned paraprofessional and/or support staff.

11. Makes referrals to any necessary specialized support services.

12. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal.

NOTABLE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

There may be occasions when the instructor must engage in the behavioral management or physical control of students. Some light to moderate lifting and general mobility around the campus area may also be necessary. Must pass a MAISD-paid physical examination and/or back x-ray, before an unconditional offer of employment can be made.

TYPICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Most work is performed in a classroom or specialized service area.

EVALUATION:
Teachers are evaluated at least annually according to Michigan law, Board policy, and the current bargained agreements.

OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT:
Advancement is possible to available administrative positions within the Career/Technical
Education area and with the MAISD at large.

WORK LOCATION(S):
Most work is performed at the Career Tech Center or at community-based instructional or work sites.

TRAVEL/OVERTIME EXPECTATIONS:
Travel around the community should be anticipated.

PAY STRUCTURE:

This position is on the CTC Professional scale of the MAISD salary scales.
