Reports to: Executive Director
Hours/Status: 20 hr./week; core schedule Thursday-Saturday; ability to flex from core for evening or weekend programs, museum events and other staffing needs.
Compensation: $15.50-$16.50
Description: The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting and supervising volunteers and interns across all three locations: Museum of the West, Dinosaur Journey and Cross Orchards. The Coordinator will provide consultation for all volunteer functions within the Museums of Western Colorado in order to strengthen public and private programming and involve a community of supporters. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and provide feedback on the volunteer and intern program and make suggestions to increase effectiveness of the program.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, promote, and maintain a wide range of volunteer opportunities within the organization.
- Survey curators and staff to regularly assess the needs for volunteers in each department.
- Maintain Volunteer service/job descriptions for each volunteer assignment
- Maintain paperwork and proper tracking of training and safety procedures
- Ensure volunteers are staffed when needed at the various locations and for programs and special events
- Conducts and/or arranges volunteer orientations and trainings
- Schedules volunteers based on needs and requests at each location
- Develop and maintain Volunteer and Intern policies, procedures, expectations and standards
- Organize and participate in volunteer recognition programs and special events
- Evaluate the volunteer and intern program for effectiveness and recommend and implement changes as agreed upon
- Provide weekly reports to ED on progress of program, schedule, and volunteer participation
- Recruit, interview and place volunteers; work with PR Manager to market volunteer opportunities
- Act as point of contact for volunteers communication; confer with volunteers to resolve grievances and promote cooperation and interest
- Work with PR Manager to provide monthly “newsletter” to volunteer base
Secondary Duties:
- Attend outreach events in support of the Outreach and Events Coordinator and Museum Educator.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· High School graduate or GED
· Some experience in retail or customer service.
· Cash handling experience is a plus.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Excellent initiative and problem-solving skills.
· Point of Sale system experience is a plus.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Slack and G Suite
· Excellent project coordination skills; multi-tasking and prioritizing. Able to work independently with limited direction in a fast-paced environment with a great deal of flexibility.
· Must be reliable and detail oriented.
· Ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds.
· Ability to work in a team setting with a high degree of daily communication required. Must care about and value the viewpoints of the other team members and organizational mission.
· Ability to commute between Museums of the West locations - Museum of the West, Dinosaur Journey, and Cross Orchards
Physical Demands:
· Must be able to remain sitting at a desk for long periods of time.
· Must be able to type for extended periods of time
· Must be able to repeatedly sit and stand
· Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
