SUMMARY STATEMENT:

As part of the Planetarium's media production and education team, create top-quality large-format animations and visual effects primarily for use in the Charles Hayden Planetarium and additionally in other MOS venues, platforms such as digital/web, and/or for licensing to other institutions. This is achieved by: collaborating on overall show and visuals development; developing CGI assets, scenes, camera paths, lighting and special effects, and scientific visualizations; participating in visuals planning meetings with other team members to deliver assigned scenes and visualizations; and taking ownership of specific scenes, animations, and/or supplementary projects. Participate in day-to-day theater operations and maintenance and develop, deliver, and refine educational programs and their supporting visual assets in order to advance the planetarium field and engage and inspire a wide variety of school, public, and adult audiences. Contribute to the creative development of a range of immersive programs including educational, entertainment- and arts-oriented programming to expand venue offerings and appeal to diverse MOS audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Full dome show production: One feature full-length Planetarium show every 1.5-2 years, plus participation in production/implementation of 6-8 additional programs annually (prerecorded music shows, speaker events, live concerts, online digital offerings, etc).
  • Design and create 20-60 models, animations, and/or scenes annually in support of the Planetarium show and digital program development.
  • Delivering educational programs: Flying and/or presenting 2-5 live shows and 2-5 prerecorded shows per week.
  • Backing shows: Assisting with audience management at the start of shows 3-8 times weekly depending on the show schedule, presence of education staff, and audience size and type.
  • Interaction with 500-1,000 Museum visitors per week.
  • Position works 5 days per week, including one regular weekend day (Saturday or Sunday). Requires some schedule flexibility with occasional evening work and availability during the Museum's busy holidays, school vacation weeks, and summer periods.

Full-Time (Sunday-Thursday)

STARTING SALARY:

EXEMPT (Salaried) $60,000-$63,200/ yearly

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education : Post-high school coursework, technical degree, associate degree, business or vocational certificate.

Experience : 3 or more years of media production and 2D/3D animation, graphic design, and CGI visuals development experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated proficiency with 2-D and 3-D animation software, techniques, and workflow, with a portfolio of original creative work.
  • Basic knowledge of and interest in astronomy, general science, and/or engineering.
  • Experience working as part of a creative team, collaborating on artistic and technical responsibilities, and coordinating well with peers.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort with public speaking.
