Museum of Fine Arts is Hiring a Collections Management Technician Near Boston, MA

Under the general direction of the Collections Manager, the MFA seeks a Collections Management Technician to perform duties related to the care of the collections and preparation of objects for exhibition, loan, and transport.

Essential Functions: 

• Design and build archival housing and specialized supports for the storage of art objects.

• Move or supervise the handling and movement of art objects with the use of appropriate art handling equipment.

• Supervise the staging, loading, and unloading of art shipments to/from offsite storage.

• Communicate with conservation staff about packing requirements and propose solutions.

• Prepare objects for curatorial and conservation viewing onsite.

• Oversee and train collection care staff as needed in regards to the packing and handling of artwork.

• Help monitor environmental conditions and condition of art objects in storage areas.

• Travel as courier to supervise the handling, transit, and installation of objects.

• Support operational activity at offsite storage facility one or more days per week; duties include preparing artwork for shipment, building transit containers, operating machinery, and assisting visiting curatorial and conservation staff.

• Order and maintain shop materials and supplies.

• Assist with gallery and exhibition installations as needed.

• Perform accurate data entry as required in TMS collections management database, including recording of object movements.

• Participate in gallery cleaning program and perform routine dusting and cleaning of art objects.

• Keep abreast of latest developments in the field through professional publications, courses and conferences.

• Perform other duties as responsibilities necessitate.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in an art-related field.

• 3-5 years of experience in art museum installations, packing, and art transport with focus on the movement, handling, and installation of objects.

• Proficient carpentry skills and a comfort level with tools required.

• General knowledge of conservation and conservation materials.

• Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.

• Ability to work well under pressure and collaboratively as part of teams, and be self-motivated.

Salary Range:

Full-Time Salary, 35 hours per week

Salary: $54,463
