Museum of Craft and Design is Hiring a Registrar Near San Francisco, CA

Job Description
Registrar

The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) is the only museum in San Francisco devoted to craft and design. Founded in 2004, MCD showcases designers, makers, and artists through a distinctive series of craft and design-focused exhibitions and award-winning public programs. MCD offers low and no-cost admission and program opportunities throughout the Bay Area, in support of its vision of making creativity accessible to everyone.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Curatorial Director and in conjunction with Exhibitions and other Museum departments, the Registrar is responsible for ensuring the safe handling and storage of artwork; coordinating the various aspects of borrowing objects for exhibitions; scheduling and overseeing delivery, preparation, installation and dispersal of art objects; and maintaining inventories and related billing and documentation to support departmental budgets. Note that MCD does not have a permanent collection so all works under Registrar’s care will be loans from artists, lenders, and institutions.

Essential Duties:

  • Under the supervision of exhibitions department, communicate with artists, lenders, packers, vendors, forwarding agents, and shippers
  • Prepare, distribute, and collect loan agreement forms from artists and lenders
  • Prepare and distribute letters of loan request to institutional lenders
  • Coordinate incoming and outgoing shipping arrangements for safe packing/shipping/handling of objects on loan to MCD for exhibitions
  • Coordinate with the exhibitions department to calendar and prioritize exhibition deadlines for incoming and outgoing shipments and arrange for return of objects with artists, lenders, packers, vendors, forwarding agents, and shippers
  • Occasionally coordinate with customs brokers for international shipments
  • Assist with unpacking and handling objects during exhibition turnover
  • Assist with conducting incoming and outgoing condition reports during exhibition turnover
  • Assist to develop budgets for registration component of exhibitions
  • Generate receipts, documentation and correspondence, and maintain departmental records
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • BA Degree with coursework in Art History, Museum Studies, or closely related field. MA preferred.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines promptly in a fast-paced office
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Highly proficient in the use of computers and software applications, including database management; the ability to learn new applications upon hire
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, sound judgment, positive attitude, and ability to work independently as well as in team environment
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to visually inspect artwork. Must be able to lift 20 lbs.

San Francisco, CA 94107: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
