About the Position

The Unit Coordinator provides routine clerical functions to meet unit and staff needs answering incoming telephone calls and transmitting messages; transcribing doctors orders; maintaining patient charts/electronic medical records and related responsibilities. Works with unit staff to assist in meeting other unit/client needs, as needed.

Position Functions & Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 1. Provide routine clerical functions to meet unit and staff needs answering incoming telephone calls and transmitting messages; transcribing doctors orders; maintaining patient charts/electronic medical records and related responsibilities. Under the supervision of an RN/LPN IV, assists patient transfer process as assigned.

2. Utilizes management of assaultive behavior techniques/principles when intervening with a potentially aggressive/assaultive patient.

3. Provides for patient safety and comfort through knowledge of general health, assistance and guidance in cleanliness, grooming, rest, activity and nourishment.

4. Participates in providing a therapeutic environment through recognition of pathology of patient behavior and guidance towards more rational behavior through utilization of the Gentle Care Philosophy.

5. Maintains an attractive and comfortable work environment.

6. Maintains an adequate level of unit supplies/forms.

7. Promotes better understanding of facility policies in contacts with patient’s families.

8. Schedule patient appointments and activities as required.

9. Considers the culturally diverse needs of patients.

10. Monitors staffing levels and assists in providing coverage as directed.

11. Maintains clinical and facility records as indicated.

12. Other duties as assigned.

13. Follows organization infection control policies and procedures. At risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Position Requirements

Skills, Education, & Experience:

1. High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in a secretarial, office or clerical educational program is preferred.

2. Two years clerical experience, with at least six months in an inpatient setting (or related mental health, residential setting, etc.), and six months reception/telephone experience. The completion of a skill development program may be substituted for up to six months of the remaining clerical experience.

3. Social/human services background is preferred.

4. Demonstrated competence in Microsoft Office suite.

5. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters.

Personal Traits & Qualifications

Knowledge of filing systems, medical charts and office systems. Ability to interact on the phone and personally with diverse people. Must work well under pres¬sure/stress, with excellent verbal communication skills. Must have good organizational skills and problem solving skills. Able to interact with chronically mentally ill clients with sensitivity, tact, and respect. Must be able to handle many different tasks and work well within interdisciplinary a team environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands

Patient care delivery involves lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, and stooping requiring upper and lower body strength. Lifting up to 50 lbs. may be required without assistance. Shift: Swing shift Employment Type: Full-Time Regular
