Assist an Eye Center physician and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems.

Responsibilities: Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to:

• Central and peripheral visual field tests
• Ocular motility tests
• Color vision tests
• Pharmacological pupil tests
• Tonometry, tonography and
• Tensilon tonography tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation.
• Examine the cornea, lens and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
• Measure acuity of patient, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision;
• Obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems
• Record findings on patient chart.
• Obtain topographical measurements of the eye to include corneal diameter and curvature
• Assist the physician to fit patients with contact lenses and to evaluate lens fit with a bio-microscope
• Instruct patients on the proper techniques used in caring for, inserting and wearing contact lenses.
• Direct the flow of patients examined by an Eye Center physician
• Obtain medical and personal data for patient charts
• Screen patients for conditions excluding ocular examination
• Arrange for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions.
• Correctly summarizing and documenting what the physician says during the exam by entering information in electronic medical records.
• Practice management and various computerized systems.
• Documenting the Plan thoroughly including all orders for testing, rationale for testing, and any indications for consultation/referrals.
• Documenting non-compliance; whether physician discussed driving limitations with patient; new medications or modifications to prescriptions etc.
• Ensuring required health information is documented and updated as needed (medications, allergies, procedures).
• Accessing systems following organizational policies to support physician and improve efficiency including tracking patient appointments
• Scheduling diagnostic testing; viewing future schedules locating patients on schedules, viewing past exam notes.
• Observing the patient and the physician
• Assisting when appropriate during the exam, including but not limited to: holding the patient’s head in the slit lamp, providing additional medications and/or instruments, instilling eye drops and following directions in a medical emergency.
• Maintaining an awareness of the patient’s verbal and non-verbal communication when the physician is providing instructions, as it may necessitate the scribe/clinical assistant to repeat information.
• Explain the use of common diagnostic equipment, provide written instructions and/or patient education materials for the patient to review at home.
• Preparing and sending prescriptions
• Preparing and printing glasses prescriptions.
• Maintaining patient flow, remaining available to the physician and limit time away from the physician and the patient.
• Developing and maintaining knowledge of practice management and electronic medical records systems including reading and implementing policies and changes
• Viewing past and future patient appointment details
• Completing work tasks
• Scheduling appointments

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour

Education:

• High school or equivalent (Preferred)

Experience:

• Ophthalmology: 1 year (Preferred)
