The District is seeking applicants for a 1.0 FTE Assistant Director III of Special Services position at the Teaching and Learning Center. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.

The annual salary listed is for the 22/23 school year.

JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES

CLASSIFICATION: CENTRAL OFFICE ADMINISTRATION

REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES

JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Special Services assists with leadership and implementation of inclusive programs and services for students with disabilities in accordance with federal and state regulations. The Assistant Director of Special Services ensures the District’s commitment to equity is integrated into all facets of program initiatives.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Promotes an inclusive culture, including cultural diversity awareness, where all students are valued.
  • Creates a culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning for students and staff.
  • Develops and implements a data-driven program to increase student achievement and meet individual student goals.
  • Implements, coordinates, monitors and evaluates programs to meet federal and state requirements, and district, school, and student needs.
  • Assists instructional staff in the alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment with relevant standards and learning goals.
  • Hires, supervises and evaluates staff to promote effective performance.
  • Manages and aligns staff and fiscal resources.
  • Serves as district liaison for due process hearings and citizen complaints.
  • Manages contracts with agencies outside the district.
  • Interacts professionally with students, staff and community.
  • Implements and complies with federal and state laws, district policies and procedures, and the Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Maintains consistent attendance and conforms to regular work hours specified under contract.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Federal and state regulations related to Special Education Law and 504 Accommodation Plans.
  • Culturally-responsive teaching and education-related practices, social justice and diversity as fundamental aspects of academic excellence.
  • Inclusionary best practices, including but not limited to multi-tiered system of supports and universal design for learning frameworks.
  • Instructional leadership and program management.
  • Fiscal management and program compliance.

Skills in:

  • Effective communication and as a spokesperson who inspires confidence and trust, especially in times of conflict and crisis, in a variety of settings with culturally diverse constituencies.
  • Using data to evaluate systemic practices that positively and/or negatively affect student needs.
  • Conflict resolution, issue resolution and grievance resolution.
  • Project and program management.
  • Promoting and engaging parents and families with the school community.
  • Effective decision-making, problem-solving and group facilitation.
  • Collaborating with school teams to improve academic outcomes and close achievement gaps and in particular for those furthest from academic justice.

Ability to:

  • Successfully develop and advance equity and inclusion in educational practices, leadership and service.
  • Work collaboratively across departments, bridge silos, and cross boundaries to achieve equity, diversity and inclusion goals
  • Build an environment of trust, teamwork and effective communication.
  • Systemically focus and align various initiatives, strategies and resources.
  • Use data to drive decisions in order to communicate and educate others on implementing continuous improvement and sustainable change.
  • Engage, organize and work with a diverse group of people under a variety of circumstances, and adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Utilize district and community resources to meet student and program needs.
  • Manage, supervise, evaluate and coach staff.
  • Reflect and take feedback to improve practice and performance.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess, or be eligible for, Washington State Administrator Certificate.
  • Previous administrative experience preferred.
  • Minimum of five years successful teaching or Educational Staff Associate experience related to special education preferred.
  • Experience teaching youth under the age of 21 and leading adult learning experiences.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and socio-economic backgrounds.
