The Community Health Educator is responsible for providing and promoting educational programs that foster the healthy development of young people and other members of the community.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and provides health education and youth development programs in diverse community settings.
  • Actively promotes the programs and services of MBPP in the community.
  • Recruits, facilitates, manages and supports Teen Council and all related programing including weekly meetings, classroom presentations, and special events like Lobby Day, Retreat, and Teen Council Summit.
  • Fulfills all requirements of assigned programs/projects as specified in funding contracts and other formal agreements.
  • Records and reports statistics and other information about program activities accurately and expediently, as assigned.
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with school districts, community agencies, service providers and other professionals in the community.
  • Maintains familiarity with relevant community resources to make appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Responds to requests for information or programs from community members in a timely manner.
  • Provides one on one health education to community members.
  • Creates and updates educational publications and materials as requested.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of sexual health by utilizing professional publications and other reliable information sources.
  • Maintains high level of professional knowledge & skill by seeking out and participating in relevant professional development activities as approved/assigned by supervisor.
  • Facilitates internal staff training activities as assigned.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements/expansion of programs.
  • Participates in larger department and agency initiatives as appropriate.
  • Reads agency email regularly (daily when possible) and responds appropriately.
  • Communicates with supervisor and department about schedule of programs and appointments in the community.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor level degree in Community or Public Health, Education, or related field is preferred.
  • Strongly prefer a minimum of two years health education, youth development or related experience.
  • Minimum of one year working with adolescents preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule including some evenings, weekends within the community, and at any of MBPP’s facilities as assigned.
  • Current Washington State Driver’s License, auto insurance, and reliable transportation.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • CHES and/or MCHES candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write (legibly), hear, understand and clearly communicate in English.
  • Ability to maintain strict patient, staff, donor, and volunteer confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful environment and react quickly in an emergency.
  • Skill with computers to include word processing, database management, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, internet, video conferencing, and e-mail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to prioritize work appropriately and make decisions in an independent manner.
  • Ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with adults and young people.
  • Ability to work effectively with key members of the department as well as volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of family planning and reproductive health.
  • Knowledge of community resources and organizations.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
  • Medical office environment with potential exposure to illness.
  • Job requires physical presence in community settings.
  • Requires sitting, standing, walking and talking for long periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate a keyboard and other office equipment.
  • Occasional lifting to 50 pounds.
