Job Description

Job Title: Director of Elementary Education

Reports to: Superintendent

Contract Length: 260 Days



Description:

Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent, directs the district’s curriculum and instructional programs at the elementary level and facilitates the ongoing development and alignment of the district’s elementary programs; facilitates the content of K-5 multiple assessments; works in collaboration with the Director of Secondary Education to ensure a guaranteed and viable curriculum across the district while supporting the components of equitable learning environments.

Qualifications:

Valid Indiana Administrator License

3-5 years of administrative leadership experience

Experience in school administration preferred

Elementary education experience preferred

Understanding and commitment to urban education and communities

Understand systems change, deep learning, and how to address inequities in learning and outcomes

based on students’ race, language, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, dis/abilities and

economic background

Experience and commitment to anti-racist practices, social justice, underserved populations, and

partnerships with urban communities and universities

Solid grounding in critical and sociocultural theories and perspectives on learning, culture, and language.

Able to support teachers in systemic school and classroom transformation, aligning concerns of

curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment in interconnected ways

Expertise and skill in a variety of models and approaches to teacher professional learning, including

effective professional learning communities, curriculum mapping, coaching, lesson study, etc.

Strong interpersonal skills and problem solving

Strong skills in communication, collaboration, team building

Experience in data analysis, interpretation, and the achievement cycle

Experience in the use of the achievement cycle professional learning communities

Expert knowledge of Indiana Academic Standards and Indiana Content Area Literacy Standards, and

college and career fields/skills

Expert knowledge in strategic planning and the development of action plans

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Serves as leader and general resource person in matters relating to elementary curriculum development and evaluation

2. Facilitates, implements, and assists with the development of a standards-based curriculum in all content areas, K-5 while addressing inequities in learning and outcomes based on students’ race, language, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, dis/abilities and economic background.

3. Coordinates and implements the K-5 and district staff development program.

4. Coordinates the elementary instructional program in a manner consistent with district goals and objectives; collaborates and supports district initiatives including the Six Enduring Principles

5. Reviews, researches, prepares and disseminates information pertaining to trends in curriculum development, extended learning programs, and intervention programs

6. Develops process and timelines for the implementation of standards-based accountability to reflect legislative and state directives

7. Facilitates the development of the content of K-5 multiple assessments to align with the district’s Board of Education approved curriculum, and Indiana academic content standards

8. Analyzes, reports and interprets student performance data and makes recommendations for instructional improvement

9. Develops, submits, and monitors budgets for the operation of assigned programs and services

10. Coordinates the process of textbook evaluation, selection, and adoption at the elementary level, in alignment with the secondary program

11. Coordinates the program of ongoing evaluation of curriculum and instruction at the elementary level through systemic school and classroom transformation, aligning concerns of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment in interconnected ways.

12. Leads elementary principals in the continuing evaluation of programs to improve student achievement while leading an ongoing program of professional learning supporting innovation and evaluation

13. Interprets the elementary curriculum, its philosophy, goals, and objectives to the Board of Education, the administration, staff, and general public

14. Oversee summer and enrichment programs for elementary

15. Supervises, directs, coordinates and/or assists with grants, including federal grant programs, as assigned

16. Meets regularly with the Superintendent to discuss important issues that might directly affect the district

17. Visits elementary schools regularly to ensure effective communication

18. Supervises and evaluates assigned certified and classified personnel

19. Coordinates Board of Education agenda items relating to the Director’s areas of responsibilities submitting items in a timely and appropriate manner to the Superintendent for final review

20. Attends Board of Education meetings

21. Facilitates elementary principals’ meetings; attends secondary principal meetings

22. Oversees elementary curriculum mapping, PLCS, and common assessments; collaborates with the Director of Secondary Education to ensure vertical alignment.

23. Supervise academic specialists

24. Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned
