Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the veterinarian during examination of animals, providing restraint as needed in order to work safely and effectively
  • Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Perform routine dental cleanings and dental extractions on animals under the direct supervision of the veterinarian
  • Ability to work in scope of practice under no direct supervision
  • Knowledge of scope of practice of RVT in the state of California
  • Know the range of services the practice provides, as well as the species it treats
  • Familiarity with breeds and coat colors
  • Ability to follow OSHA standards and find the Material Safety Data sheets quickly
  • Knowledge and ability to use standard medical and business abbreviations
  • Familiarity of infectious diseases, including prevention and steps to reduce or avoid transmission
  • Know the most common zoonotic diseases
  • Maintain a professional appearance in work appropriate clothing
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor while working under potentially stressful situations
  • Respect for clients, co-workers, and animals (alive or deceased)
  • Assist other employees as needed 
  • Keep up with new development in field and keep up with continuing education
  • Attend off-site continuing education as required by practice manager
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding clients and patients 
  • Apply bandages and splints
  • Induce and administer anesthesia to animals, under the direction of the veterinarian, and monitor animals’ responses to anesthetics so that dosages can be adjusted
  • Suture cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues, gingiva and oral mucous membranes
  • Obtain radiographs of animals with knowledge of proper positioning and techniques
  • Care for and monitor the condition of animals recovering from surgery
  • Perform laboratory tests on blood, urine, and feces
  •  Administer emergency first aid, such as performing emergency resuscitation or other life saving procedures
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials
  • Provide the veterinarian with the correct equipment and instruments as needed
  • Fill prescriptions, measuring medications and labeling containers
  • Prepare animals for surgery, performing such tasks as shaving surgical areas and placing IV catheters
  • Maintain clean examination rooms and treatment areas

 Skills and Abilities

  • Effectively communicate in the English language both in writing and orally
  • Accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide, including unit conversions and calculate fluid therapy drip rates
  • Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Problem solving, including critical thinking
  • Regularly stand for extended periods
  • Frequently walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and lift or move up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain confidence around pets
  • Be familiar with Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, and become proficient in a short time period with our veterinary management software

Experience, Education, and/or Training

  • High school education required
  • License as veterinary technician required
  • 1-2 years experience in a veterinary clinic is preferred
