Job Description

The Moscow Food Co-op seeks Kitchen Staff to wash dishes, utensils, and cookware in our kitchen as well as stock the prepared food supplies. Applicants must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, work quickly and efficiently while operating in a team-centered environment. Must be punctual, dependable, able to learn basic tasks and follow instructions; able to lift 50 pounds and spend long hours on your feet. Must be able to work a variety of shifts, including nights and weekends.

This is a Full-Time (38-40 hrs) or Part-Time (20-25 hrs) position. Days and shifts vary and include early morning, evenings and weekends. Candidates must be available to work on the weekends, holiday and during university breaks.

Job Description

The Kitchen Staff is responsible for assisting the Kitchen Manager with providing excellent customer service by providing customers and staff with clean and sanitized utensils, dishes, glassware and equipment while maintaining a clean and safe environment. Kitchen Staff support kitchen operations by washing dishes and stocking dishes as well as stocking the prepared foods. This position will work closely with the Kitchen Manager on achieving goals for customer service, sales, labor, and margin.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Dishwashing:

  • Maintains clean, sanitary stock of dishes and utensils, glassware, and equipment.
  • Ensures dishes are sanitized and available as needed
  • Sets up dish machine in the AM and closes down machine in the PM according to company procedures
  • Washes, rinses, and loads soiled dishes into dish rack and runs through sanitizer or sprays
  • Washes plate ware, glassware, silverware, pots/pans and kitchen utensils according to the Idaho Health Department 4 step process
  • Unloads and stacks dishes and glassware in appropriate storage area.
  • Sorts silverware and utensils and places them safely in proper storage area
  • Operates dish washing equipment in a safe manner
  • Maintains a clean, sanitary work area and ensures safe storage of dish carts and related supplies.
  • Maintains daily cleanliness and maintenance of dish machine
  • Places clean plate ware, glassware, silverware and pot/pans in specified shelves according to sanitation and cleaning procedures
  • Keeps dish areas clean by sweeping, mopping floors, and wiping countertops
  • Completes assigned prep work and beautification duties
  • Keeps immediate supervisor promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance and takes prompt corrective action where necessary or suggests alternative courses of action which may be taken
  • Helps other departments during slow periods
  • Completes extra cleanings and opening and/or closing checklists as needed.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned by the Purchasing and Logistics Manager.

Kitchen Stocking

  • Work with kitchen stockers to ensure that all kitchen areas stocked, rotated, labeled and clean when needed.
  • Clean spills and clutter accumulated while performing job tasks.
  • Organize back stock as necessary to assist in efficient flow of items to the kitchen.
  • Receive product in the back room, ensuring that all items are received and correct.
  • Submit invoice to Kitchen Manager for entry into database.
  • Maintain stockroom cleanliness.
  • Ensure that back stock area is organized and clear for receiving shipments.
  • Communicate supply/back stock status with kitchen buyer.

Maintenance

  • Work with other staff to keep kitchen area clean and sanitary
  • Keep equipment in good working order and notify managers of needed repairs
  • Stock and rotate supplies
  • Leave workspace clean and ready for following shifts
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace throughout shift
  • Keeps all pans/pots clean of any carbon build-up by scrubbing with Barkeepers friend

Co-op Performance Standards

Customer Service

  • Demonstrate excellent customer skills, both internally and externally; Follow the 10-4 service rule
  • Make yourself available to customers; greet each customer promptly with a smile.
  • Handle customer complaints and questions courteously.
  • Coordinate with all supervisors and leads to address customer concerns, questions or thoughts. i.e., refunds, oops coupons, angry customers, broken machinery etc.
  • Help customers place special orders.
  • Accurately and completely record special orders and ensure the forms are delivered for processing.
  • Offer tastes, samples, suggestions to customers.

Communication

  • Communicate directly and professionally, following the Moscow Food Co-op Coworker Conduct Commitment.
  • Stay up to date on information in department log books.
  • Answer and route phone calls according to Moscow Food Co-op procedures.
  • Keep a working phone and personal email address for necessary communication from the Co-op.
  • Report customer suggestions, comments, and complaints to Mod and Department Manager.

Other Duties

  • Work cooperatively with others in the department and throughout store
  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Take breaks according to department and store policy.
  • Requests time-off according to department and store policy, arranges subs for scheduled shifts and subs when needed.
  • Follows the direction of the Manager on Duty (MOD).
  • Carry out established opening and closing procedures.
  • Complete Co-op-wide trainings as required.
  • Attend all inventories, dept. meetings, and all-staff meetings.
  • Participate in department and store-wide initiatives such as Open Book Management and others as they occur.
  • Offer suggestions and information about products.
  • Maintain accurate use of the time system, substitute for other staff as needed.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all staff and customers.
  • Assist with training new staff when appropriate

Requirements

Required

  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the Moscow Food Co-op
  • Retail or dishwashing experience preferred
  • Motivated, energetic, outgoing, self-directed, positive, adaptable team player.
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills.
  • Highly motivated with a sense of urgency and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment at all times with all levels of employees; able to work on a team or independently.
  • Organized and able to handle multiple demands; Reliable and dependable.
  • Basic computer and math skills
  • Operate kitchen machinery (sanitizer, etc)
  • Hold or obtain a current food safety card for the state of Idaho.
  • Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the job.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for long periods and work in close quarters with other people.
  • Regular, predictable attendance including, weekend, evening and holiday work required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability and skill to operate equipment used in dishwashing.
  • Able to reach, bend, and stoop and tolerate a loud environment
  • Able to work in a hot and damp environment; able to immerse hands in water frequently
