Job Title: Quality Control Lead Technician
Classification: Non-Exempt Position
Salary Range: $26.00-$30.00 per hour depending on experience
Department: Quality
Reports to: Quality Control Manager/Supervisor
Date: March 7, 2024
Position Summary: As a Quality Control Lead technician, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with implementing Morris Packaging’s and customers quality standards, following quality control best practices, providing guidance, adhering to quality control policies, actively participating in resolving production and customer issues and offering support to all areas of production, safely, efficiently, and accurately.
Essential Functions:
  • Monitor product quality of each department. Ensure deficiencies are caught and corrected.
  • Report quality deficiencies and communicate those deficiencies to operators, department & shift leads, shift supervisors and other quality control technicians.
  • Flag, document and quarantine defective material. This includes moving defective products to the designated area and ensuring all nonconforming material is tracked to the origination point of defect and recorded.
  • Follow up on holds. Gather required information, such as gathering samples, cutting down rolls, etc. and communicate disposition to necessary parties.
  • Request corrected tags from accounting.
  • Enter Vendor claims. Gather necessary samples for vendor along with credit requests and follow up, as necessary.
  • Assign internal customer and external (supplier) Corrective Actions.
  • Obtain first run sample, make proper folders and files.
  • Create labels, run copies of master’s, and keep QA file organized.
  • Ability to perform internal audits for SQF of other departments in the facility.
  • Ability to take direction and follow the quality control manager/supervisor requests.
  • Responsible for banding materials to pallet to ensure safety when moved.
  • Ability to run the laboratory equipment as needed for testing. This includes computers, COF tester, micrometer, gloss meter, tear tester and all other in-house quality control equipment.
  • Monitor calibration log to see when calibration of equipment is needed and arrange for internal or external calibration.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with team members, production staff and visiting customers and suppliers.
  • Direct, coach and train new and current quality control technicians.
  • Schedule quality control technicians workload and machine assignments.
  • Create training tools, procedures and policies and provide training to necessary parties.
  • Assist and verify color standards at press and with supplier samples using X-rite equipment.
  • Verify print copy to the customers’ approved artwork via GMG or the AX system.
  • Gather/retain samples and verify that they are the current revision and have passed quality standards. File samples in the designated location.
  • Ensure color standards are consistent throughout the entire run from including shift to shift, roll to roll and production run to production run.
  • Ability to read and understand a die line (blueprint) of a bag.
  • Attend scheduled meetings when Quality Manager is unable to attend.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibration, and cleaning solvents. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. It has a moderate to high demand for tight deadlines. This position will experience moderate interruption in workflow, starting and stopping for product changeovers.
Physical Demands: The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee is required to see color variance between products, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, stand for extended periods of time and walk extended distances. While performing the duties of this job:
  • Frequent (6 or more hours per day) working at a computer terminal.
  • Continuous (6 or more hours per day) standing and walking.
  • Continuous (6 or more hours per day) talking, teaching and repetitive motion, hand/wrist movement.
  • Intermittent (1 to 2 hours per day) bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting, and grasping.
  • Ability to move and lift objects, frequently 20-75 lbs.
  • Ability to use lifting equipment.
  • Good eyesight, normal hearing.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. Days, nights, and hours may vary depending on production requirements. This position may require significant work hours beyond the normal workday based on the demands of the business cycle, customer volume of business.
Travel: Travel is not required for this position.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent computer skills with expertise in Microsoft Excel.
  • Must be able to read standard measuring tape (imperial or metric).
  • Ability to maintain, understand and follow quality, safety and SQF standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with team members and production staff.
  • Ability to understand and read a tape measure.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to receive, track and distribute materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Ability to complete routine quality paperwork.
  • Ability to read, sort, check, count and verify numbers.
  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
