This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position reporting to the Vice President & General Manager.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Port Engineer is the lead engineer of the local Moran fleet reporting directly to the Vice President/General Manager, Miami. This position includes accepting a high level of accountability and displaying strong initiative for the operation and maintenance of the floating and support assets of the division, including providing direct support to the tug engineers. Effective communication, coordination and personnel interface are key to the success of this position. The Port Engineer is required to be fully conversant with, and continually set a good example of, safe working practices per Moran’s Mission Statement and Safety Management System (SMS).

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

Manage Local Engineering Activities

  • Actively pursues safety improvements per our Mission Statement.
  • Reviews Daily Engineering Reports from vessels.
  • Implements and monitors the Preventive Maintenance Plan.
  • Manages and completes vessel repairs.
  • Completes capital improvement projects.
  • Ensures regulatory and class requirements are met.
  • Purchases Engine Department spares and consumables.
  • Oversees Engineer development, training, and qualifications.
  • Seeks out and implements cost-saving measures, where appropriate.
  • As the subject matter expert, maintains an intimate knowledge of each vessel’s systems and status and leads troubleshooting efforts as needed.
  • Maintains corporate databases as they apply to the Engineering Department.
  • Obtains PIC Chief for all division tugs.
  • Obtains Shipyard Competent Person rating, including use of QRAE gas detection equipment.

Interface with Corporate Construction and Repair Department

  • Seeks guidance and approval relating to major repairs, modifications, or equipment overhauls.
  • Assists with specifications and completion of vessel dry dockings.
  • Shares information relevant to Moran’s comprehensive fleet.

Maintain Shore Side Engineering Facilities and Support Equipment

  • Ensures regulatory compliance as applicable.
  • Maintains and tracks inventories as required.
  • Ensures readiness of support equipment (i.e., forklift, crane, etc. as applicable).

Manage Local Vendor Relationships

  • Vets and selects vendors.
  • Coordinates and schedules vendors.
  • Ensures Quality Control and SMS conformance relating to vendor behavior and performance.
  • Reviews and approves vendor invoicing.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED.
  • 5 years of relevant engineering experience in a licensed capacity, including current or past USCG engineering licensure.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain TWIC documentation (including meeting the physical requirements of the USCG 719K physical exam).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Demonstrated good judgment, work flexibility, and a high level of initiative and organization.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced Marine Engineering expertise evidenced by at least a B.S. degree in Marine Engineering.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THIS POSITION INCLUDE THE ABILITY TO:

  • Sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Frequently reach, bend, stoop, and crawl.
  • Frequently walk and navigate stairs, ladders, and uneven surfaces.
  • Occasional tool use to include wide range of combined physical motions.
  • Occasionally lift 75 lbs.
  • Speak, hear, and see (color vision required).

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Hours of work are the division’s business hours Monday through Friday, with the incumbent expected to be available, when required, during off-hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to travel (about 15% of the time) when required, including air travel.
