ABOUT THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (MCDOT):

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

MCDOT seeks a Supervisor, Sign and Marking Unitfor its Sign and Marking Shop, within the Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations. The Shop is located at 1283 Seven Locks Drive, Building E, Rockville, Maryland.

This is a supervisory position, in responsible charge of the Sign and Marking Shop (Shop). The Sign Shop is comprised of twelve (12) employees and is primary operations include fabrication and installation of traffic and street name signs, Countywide installation of pavement markings including raised pavement markers, and implementation of temporary traffic control in support of special events, emergencies, and major traffic incidents in coordination with State and local law enforcement.

This position supervises the Shop employees, directs the daily activities at the Shop, and is responsible for the purchase and proper maintenance of all of the Shop tools, machinery, equipment, and the large fleet of specialty vehicles that includes the County’s only pavement marking truck. This position is the point of contact for various County offices, including the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service and Montgomery County Police Department, as well as other local & state offices conducting business with the Shop, as well as all County residents who coordinate directly with the Shop regarding their signing & marking needs.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of the Shop’s contractual services including field inspection and validation services, shipments, deliveries, building maintenance, and budget management.
  • Hiring and training staff on the proper comprehension and application of signing and pavement marking policies, regulations, standards, and specifications.
  • Supervision of the Shop’s daily operations, including assigning work and providing the necessary guidance and directions to successfully complete the assigned work.

Position responsibilities require knowledge of signing and pavement marking guidelines and standards, and experience using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), a Federal publication used by transportation engineers as the primary signing and marking guide nationwide.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The standard and fixed work schedule for this position in Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. On a regular basis, the position requires overtime during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position REQUIRES the possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and employee would be required to operate County vehicles daily, including the County’s heavy-duty paint truck and the crash-attenuator mounted coning truck.

The individual selected for this position will be considered an Essential Employee and overtime work will be required. Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

Minimum Qualifications


Experience
: Five (5) years of applicable experience in the areas of sign fabrication and installation and pavement marking, two (2) years of which must have been as a lead worker or in a supervisory capacity.

Education: Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Commercial Driver's License appropriate to the equipment operated by an employee in this class.

Preferred Criteria


There are NO Preferred Criteria Assessments
. All Applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated “Qualified”, placed on the eligible list, and may be considered for an interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications of the same grade or higher will be placed on the Eligible List as a “Transfer” candidate and may be considered for an interview.

  • Experience installing traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Experience using MUTCD.
  • Experience supervising and leading others.
  • Experience managing budgets including validation and payment of invoices.
