Description
The successful candidate will provide academic, career, and personal counseling to Monterey Peninsula College's diverse student population. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for teaching sections of Counseling Guidance courses and providing counseling services to students in the Dual Enrollment program, including, but not limited to low-income, English language learners, former foster youth, adult school and career technical education students.
Teach a variety of courses, during the day, evening, or online at the Monterey
campus, Marina Education Center and/or other designated locations.
Full time faculty have responsibilities outside the classroom through contributions to the department and the college which include curriculum development and evaluation, and participation in student achievement and success. Faculty are expected to engage in campus life and become involved in college committees.
Example of Duties
As a fulltime Counseling faculty member in the Counseling Department, the successful candidate will also:
Assist targeted high school students in assessing, planning, and implementing their immediate and long-range goals through programs such as Enrollment, Jump Start, Guided Pathways, and other academic and student services programs designed to facilitate their college readiness and early commitment to college.
Support a student caseload using holistic advising approaches, proactive outreach, and data-informed strategy in an effort to assess potential roadblocks, take early action to mitigate them, and advocate on behalf of students.
Teach a variety of Student Development courses online and/or in classroom and workshops such as Orientation, Advisement, Career Planning, Goal Selection, Study Skills, Test Taking Techniques, and Note-Taking.
Assist students in the development of their Student Education Plans.
Utilize technology to monitor student risk trends over time, track student performance and progress toward graduation, and proactively reach out to students in need of intervention.
Educate students on enrollment, registration, major selection, college processes, and new student success strategies.
Participate in department, division, and institutional goals and activities by assisting in the planning and delivery of programs and new initiatives.
In collaboration with the Student Outreach and Retention Director and the Marketing Director works to develop and implement district-wide marketing and recruitment strategies for the Dual Enrollment program emphasizing the value of college success courses.
Prepare and maintain accurate counseling records using current technology, relay pertinent information to college personnel as needed, and respect the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives.
Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, census reports).
Engage in activities that enhance the department's rapport with area high schools to foster concurrent/dual enrollment opportunities as well as other potential activities with colleges and businesses.
Hold required office hours and attend division/department meetings, on/off campus.
Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and engage in participatory governance committees and campus life activities.
Communicate and work cooperatively with the Director, Partnerships and Pathways (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the MPCTA Contract, and as assigned at the Monterey campus, and other duties as assigned.
Teach a variety of courses, during the day, evening, or online at the Monterey campus, Marina Education Center and/or other designated locations.
A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
Qualifications

New employees may begin working in their assignments only after the District has received proof that the person is fully vaccinated or an exemption has been approved.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling;
OR
A Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);
OR
The equivalent.
AND Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to and appreciation for the diverseacademic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, gender identity, religious, sexualorientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students attending a community college
  • Note: Graduate students currently finishing up work on a Master's degree may apply with the understanding that, if they are offered the position, it will be a conditional offer. Such an offer would be contingent upon meeting all the requirements and qualifications associated with the position, including conferral of a Master's degree in the required discipline(s). A transcript showing college coursework is insufficient. In order to meet this requirement, no later than July 10, 2023, finalists are required to submit Official transcripts to MPC Human Resources that reflect conferral of the required degree. After the District receives the Official transcripts confirming conferral of the degree as well as completion of all other pre-employment requirements, the offer of employment will be submitted to our Board of Trustees for approval no later than at its July 2023 regular meeting.

Desirable Qualifications
Knowledge of student development theory, first-year specific theory, and effective student success, retention, and completion strategies.
Knowledge of and commitment to community college counseling and teaching.
Experience with or knowledge of California Community College Chancellor's Office initiatives (AB 705, Guided Pathways, Dual Enrollment etc.)
Experience with or ability to perform counseling services at the community college level.
Experience with or ability to teach Counseling Development courses at the community college level.
Knowledge of the role of lived experiences and intersecting identities in the experience of students, particularly first-generation, adult, and high financial need students.
Experience with or ability to perform recruitment and outreach activities.
Ability to meet the needs of community college learners with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of skills and goals.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, community partners, and intercampus departments and programs.
Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with colleagues on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would promote counseling services.
Demonstrated skill in effective interpersonal communication, collaboration, professionalism, and student advocacy.
Effective oral and written communication skills.

Assignment & Anticipated Start Date
Counselors shall work an additional 10 days per year, for a total of 185.5 days, The additional ten (10) days shall be paid at 1/175 of the contract salary per day. The assignment will include a minimum of 35 hours per week (30 hours of student contact time and 5 hours of office/meeting/committee activities).When teaching is assigned, release time will be granted proportionately. The selected candidate will participate in campus wide events beginning in Fall, 2023.
