Montana Department of Justice is Hiring an Assistant Attorney General (Crime Information Bureau) Near Missoula, MT

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Attorney to join the Crime Information Bureau Team!

This is an Assistant Attorney General position within the Crime Information Bureau of Division and provides professional legal services, including training and trial assistance, research, and consultation, to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies as authorized by the Attorney General and mandated by law.

This position is funded by the SORNA Grant with an anticipated end date of September 30, 2024. Grant has the ability to be reinstated.

Key objectives of this position:

  • Research, recommend, develop, and testify about legislative updates or enhancements.
  • Research, develop, and execute MOUs or other agreements with Indian tribes who are currently operating as SORNA jurisdictions in Montana or wish to do so.
  • Review, develop, enhance and make available community education programs on sex offender topics, such as registration, notification, treatment, and supervision strategies; safety planning and training; facts and statistics about sexual offending and offenders for criminal justice agency personnel and SORNA Tribe(s).
  • Reduce the number of non-compliant offenders by investigating and prosecuting state, tribal, and Interstate Compact offenders who have failed to register.
  • Salary: $ 92,376.00 - 96,424.00 Yearly

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor Degree.
  • Admission to and maintenance of licensure from the State Bar of Montana.
  • At least two years of specialized law and litigation experience.
  • If licensed in another state, must be able to become licensed to practice law in Montana within one year of hire. Incumbent is responsible for paying fees for MT State licensure.
  • Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of Montana and federal rules of criminal and appellate procedure, evidence, and substantive criminal law; of legal research methods and techniques (including automated legal research) and legal writing, including citation and documentation. Working knowledge of word processing software.
  • Skills: Criminal jury trial preparation and delivery skills with emphasis on oral argument and jury persuasion. Teaching large and small groups on criminal law and procedure issues.
  • Abilities: Ability to write clearly and concisely; to prepare and communicate orally the facts and arguments of a case to persuade others to accept the viewpoint presented; to review and decipher complex forensic and psychiatric reports; to apply sound judgement to complex and sensitive factual situations; to act with initiative, good judgement and tact; to deal appropriately with confidential and sensitive material; to communicate appropriately with confidential and sensitive material; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to maintain effective working relationships with other employees; to provide direction in the investigation and prosecution of complex and high profile criminal cases of all types throughout the state and to control the direction and course of such investigations and prosecutions.

If you have been practicing law for five years or less, a copy of your law school transcript is preferred but not required.
