Monroe County Public Library is Hiring a Circulation Lead Near Bloomington, IN

Expertise
I serve as a shift leader, principle trainer, and mentor for Materials Handlers, working closely with Materials Handlers to provide guidance and support for their work under the direction of my manager. I am responsible for ensuring the efficient and accurate return of Library materials to their proper location, ensuring requests for Holds are processed and delivered promptly, addressing collection and/or shelving issues as they arise, and developing necessary documentation for executing those processes. I maintain an area of the collection or workflow which requires timely and daily action including opening and closing tasks, newspaper check-in, and advanced pick list processing.

Essential Functions, Responsibilities, Knowledge and Skills

  • I oversee training and mentoring of Materials Handlers under the guidance of my manager resulting in increased productivity and employee skills and empowerment.
  • I identify workflow priorities and assignments for Materials Handlers as needed and under the guidance of my manager.
  • I identify shelving needs and shelve Library materials; retrieve, process, and prepare holds; check-in newspapers and periodicals; prepare new materials for circulation; pull materials from weeding lists; and search for materials needing attention.
  • I monitor and troubleshooting the Library's automated materials handling system and report system performance to my manager.
  • I develop and assist in the implementation of process improvement and evaluation initiatives. I work closely with my manager to plan and implement changes to the handling of Library materials and related processes in order to improve efficiency of workflow and accessibility of materials.
  • I guide, support, and review shelf-reading assignments for Materials Handlers and oversee shelf-reading accuracy and efficiency.
  • I perform clerical assistance for projects and daily routines including data entry and creating reports.
  • I provide directional and collection-related assistance to Library patrons.
  • I oversee and participate in holds processing and delivery of holds across the system including daily and/or weekly van delivery routes.
  • I address collection access and maintenance issues as they arise and coordinate with other departments as needed to resolve collection issues.
  • I may assist with routine tasks, undertake special projects, and participate in teams or groups.

  • I have the ability to shelve at floor level and shelves above six feet as well as the ability to maneuver carts and lift light to moderately heavy objects.
  • I have the ability to learn and utilize the Dewey Decimal System; I concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
  • I use good critical thinking and problem-solving skills and good organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize assigned tasks.
  • I have a working knowledge of public library and business computer applications with the ability to learn and adapt to new software and equipment technologies.
  • I have a good knowledge of library policies and procedures.

Required Education/Experience and License/Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience with materials inventory/distribution systems strongly preferred.
  • Experience with picking/packing/moving materials and maintaining appropriate records preferred.
  • Previous library experience helpful.
  • Fluency in a second language is considered helpful in this position.
  • May require verification of valid driver's license and proof of insurability should assignment(s) include regular travel.

Supervision Received

Receives occasional direct supervision. Work is assigned and performed with some functional guidance following established procedures. Works independently and as a team. Has some latitude in setting work flow and performance routines. Unusual questions and situations are referred to the supervisor or manager, frequently with additional information and/or suggestions.

Working Conditions

  • Frequently standing, walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, and moving from one work site to another.
  • Regular bending at the waist and at the knees associated with materials transfers and shelving.
  • Frequent moderate (25 lbs.) and heavy (up to 50 lbs.) lifting. Assistance with excessive loads is required.
  • Regular pushing/pulling of fully loaded book carts (filled carts may weigh over 100 lbs.).
  • Regular reaching/stretching between floor level and six feet (bookshelves).
  • Work has standard vision requirements; frequent speaking, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Occasional sitting and performing various repetitive actions and extensive use of keyboards, mice monitors, and varied digital devices, requires using hands to finger, handling or feeling and repetitive motions.
  • Normal library working conditions; moderate exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.).
  • Occasional exposure to fluctuations in interior conditions such as noise and temperatures.
  • May encounter exposure to outside elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. when traveling on library business.
  • Infrequent climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms.
