Monroe County Public Library is Hiring an Acquisition Technician Near Bloomington, IN

Expertise

I receive and prepare Library acquisitions of materials for cataloging and distribution. I perform physical and data entry functions. I verify the accuracy of items delivered according to purchase order. I sort materials according to the distribution priority schedule and I prepare items for internal processing.

Essential Functions, Responsibilities, Knowledge and Skills

  • I process and prepare received shipments of Library materials including print, AV, periodicals, and various forms of circulating technology and related items; I unpack boxes and inspect contents. I follow standard procedures to verify accuracy of items received; I compare acquisitions received with a shipping list and invoiced counts and titles.
  • I use the Library’s electronic materials tracking system to enter items as received.
  • I check for vendor-provided information on priority items and holds; forward holds and rush items with complete information to cataloging personnel. I prepare and route other items to appropriate holding areas for processing.
  • I assist the Acquisitions Associate in all functions of the acquisitions process; I review vendor reports and ensure that database records accurately reflect vendor accounting; I create purchase orders and process invoices for payment.
  • I provide general support for Acquisitions Specialists and prepare materials for return/exchange, I update invoices, etc.
  • I perform various clerical tasks, including answering phones, sorting mail, responding to emails and organizing materials to assist with the cataloging process.
  • I provide occasional support to materials handling positions and may provide occasional or regular clerical support within the library.
  • I participate in departmental and library-provided training and educational programs.
  • I possess a knowledge of basic accounting principles and strong math skills.
  • I have excellent computer skills with working knowledge of standard hardware and software.
  • I have good interpersonal skills for interacting with other employees and outside contacts in a tactful and professional manner.
  • I have good organizational and time-management skills and the ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.

Required Education/Experience and License/Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Excellent organizational skills required,
  • Clerical and/or bookkeeping experience preferred.
  • Materials processing skills including cataloging, processing, ordering or receiving materials, strongly preferred.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision. Follows standard procedures and operates with infrequent functional guidance. Works independently and normally sets work flow and performance routines. Unusual questions and situations are referred to the supervisor or manager, frequently accompanied with additional information and suggestions for correction.

Working Conditions

  • Regularly sitting and performing various repetitive actions and extensive use of keyboards, mice, monitors, and varied digital devices, requires use of hands, fingers and repetitive motions.
  • Frequently standing, walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, and moving from one work site to another.
  • Work has standard vision requirements; frequent speaking, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Occasional to frequent travel, entering and exiting vehicles, driving, moving, and carrying materials to and from various locations.
  • Occasional moderate lifting (25 lbs.) and infrequent heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Assistance with excessive loads is required.
  • Normal library working conditions; moderate exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.).
  • Occasional exposure to fluctuations in interior conditions such as noise and temperatures.
  • May encounter exposure to outside elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. when traveling on library business.
  • Infrequent climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms.

MCPL employees may be assigned to work on weekdays, evenings or weekends. MCPL remains open during local academic breaks and we are unable to accommodate extended absences, including those associated with semester breaks. MCPL work schedules adjust in response to changing operational needs.
