Provide legal representation for indigent persons as assigned after those persons are appointed an attorney from the Monroe County Public Defender Office by the various Monroe County Circuit Courts.
Job Responsibilities:
Represent indigent persons as assigned in cases that will include criminal felonies, criminal misdemeanours, infractions if appointed; mental health commitments, child in need of services cases, termination of parental rights cases, juvenile delinquency cases, juvenile status cases, child support cases (divorce, paternity, etc), post conviction relief cases, and appeals from final judgments in all.
Qualifications:
JD degree, admission to the Indiana Bar or eligible for admission, computer literacy, minimum typing 40 WPM, knowledge of standard legal procedures, no pending disciplinary proceedings, successfully pass a post offer drug screen and criminal history background check. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and in a team environment. Previous experience as a criminal defense attorney or prosecutor is preferable. Trial experience is desirable.
Salary:
2023 Annual Salary: $59,769 - $79,316 with benefits. (2024 salary $74,111 - $98,364) Based on years of service with Monroe County and experience.
