Job Description:

Function of Position:

Assist Chemistry Technical Assistant with duties required to support Chemistry laboratories in introductory through organic chemistry courses.

Summary and Purpose of Position:

This position requires the candidate to have a STEM major/degree and/or STEM lab experience. Under direct supervision of the Chemistry Technical Assistant, the Laboratory Support Personnel maintains general condition of laboratory, prep room, and stock room areas. Sets up laboratories for instruction. Switches out completed lab experiments and returns materials to proper locations. Maintains equipment. Assists in supervising student aides to meet lab schedules. Assists with hazardous waste management.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of lab rooms, stockrooms, and prep area.
  • Assists TA in preparation of samples, solutions, and materials for laboratory experiments.
  • Replenishes, cleans, and organizes supply kits for experiments.
  • Assists in equipment setup for laboratory experiments.
  • Maintains level, cleanliness, and calibration of balances.
  • Maintains organization and materials in student lab drawers.
  • Assists with department equipment inventory control.
  • Assists with chemical inventory and SDS records.
  • Refills consumable supplies. (Paper towels, distilled water, glassware, soap, and gloves).
  • Replaces broken glassware.
  • Assists in maintenance of ice maker and ELIX 15 water purification system.
  • Delivers ice and carboys of water as needed to labs.
  • Labels hazardous waste and completes forms for disposal of waste.
  • Neutralizes acid/base waste and maintains records.
  • Performs standardization of acid and base solutions to determine exact concentrations.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Effective written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Math skills up to and including College Algebra.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in laboratory safety
  • Enrolled in, or graduated from, a STEM degree program with significant chemistry lab coursework (Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Engineering, or related degree).
  • Previous work experience as a Student Aide in STEM
  • Previous lab experience
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages proficiently

Additional Information:

Salary: $23/hour

Hours: 15 hours/week
