Job Description:

Function of Position:

The Assistant Director of Community Relations (CR) supports and helps lead overall College communications. The position reports to the Director of Community Relations. The Assistant Director develops and implements communication plans, manages MCC's media relations, serves as a primary media liaison, and supports and coordinates prioritized College projects (digital and print) that advance MCC's mission and goals with internal and external stakeholders. The Assistant Director assumes a leadership role in the department, including managing CR projects and acting on behalf of the Director as required. The Assistant Director for CR reinforces MCC's regional and national reputation as a leader among best-practice colleges.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Identifies, develops, and communicates news and feature stories related to key priorities and supportive of the College's general positioning and key messages. This includes: researching, writing, and editing copy; preparing official College statements; ensuring accuracy, excellence, and consistency; determining the appropriate and most effective communication vehicle; and preparing College personnel and students for media interviews.
  • Oversees the production of non-recruitment projects (digital and print), including drafting production schedules; suggesting appropriate strategies for successfully completing projects; researching; writing and/or editing; proofreading; overseeing photography; and coordinating design and production.
  • Leads and manages departmental projects from concept development to implementation.
  • Works with and oversees projects that utilize part-time writers and other internal creative partners.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with the media.
  • Arranges photography to support digital, print, and media-related projects as necessary.
  • Researches background material for writing and other projects.
  • In the absence of the Director, assumes responsibilities for managing the department, implementing policies and procedures, and representing the Community Relations team at meetings and functions.

Secondary Functions:

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Director of Community Relations.
  • Assists in developing and executing the College's emergency and crisis communications.
  • Plans, oversees, and assists in broad institutional events.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned a minimum of a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field (communication, journalism, public relations, English, etc.) from an accredited higher education institution
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a communication field
  • Evidence of effective written, verbal, problem-solving, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and keen attention to detail
  • Evidence of the ability to manage projects and deadlines
  • Documented ability to integrate data into decision-making to promote effective practice and policy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working within a higher education context
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $65,000 to $81,585 and is based on these mentioned factors.
