Director of Operations

The Director-Operations is expected to provide overall leadership and responsibility for the manufacturing operations, including all safety, quality, and cost results and issues. In addition, the position will continually review all operational procedures, with a view to improving operating performance and financial results and will have overall responsibility for the P&L of the plant. This position has a number of direct reports and will provide overall leadership and development opportunities for team members, building a high-performing team.

The qualified individual should have significant previous experience of working in a manufacturing production or operations environment and should have the financial and analytical skills to manage the profitability of the plant, along with the technical ability to identify growth opportunities and potential cost and waste-saving initiatives. In addition, the successful candidate should be a strong people manager, with the capacity to build, manage, and motivate a high-performing team that will maximize the plant’s profitability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall leadership for all aspects of the manufacturing operation, directing efforts to achieve daily, weekly, monthly, and annual goals.
  • Ensure that high levels of customer satisfaction are met.
  • Monitor revenue and budgets, analyzing performance and financial impacting KPIs, with a view to maximizing profits.
  • Provide direction to operational teams based on trends.
  • Review and analyze performance, making comparisons to past performance and investigating differences.
  • Collaborate as necessary with partners in Procurement, Safety, and Demand planning.
  • Define, implement, and revise operational and facility policies and guidelines.
  • Lead and support corrective actions to close gaps in processes to drive improvement of results.
  • Review the financial performance of the plant, assuming overall responsibility of the P&L.
  • Develop growth opportunities as well as waste reduction initiatives to improve revenue.
  • Develop, mentor, and train the team to achieve and improve performance both on a personal level and company level.
  • Build a high-performing team capable of meeting expectations, focusing on building team relationships.
  • Collaborate with department managers as required to achieve financial objectives, company goals, and operational compliance.
  • Develop cross-functional internal and external relationships to improve overall plant performance.
  • Communicate with supervisor and management as necessary to provide updates on operations and opportunities.
  • Manage the available resources.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:


  • Education: Associate degree is required.
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Business, Business Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Preferred Experience: Ten or more years of relevant experience, including experience working in Continuous Improvement, Quality, and Warehousing functions.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Competencies and Skills:

  • Strong financial literacy, and the ability to manage the P&L of the plant.
  • Solid knowledge of general manufacturing operations regulations, processes, and procedures, including relevant safety regulations and procedures.
  • Understanding of the equipment used at the plant.
  • Understanding of the legal, regulatory, and HR issues that surround managing people.
  • Continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to create, manage and motivate a high-performing team.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems and develop and implement processes to prevent future occurrences.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize resources.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time in front of a computer.
  • Ability to stand and move about the plant for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting items of up to 20 lbs. unassisted, bending, standing, climbing or walking.
  • Visual and hearing acuity.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Works in a manufacturing plant and in a general office environment.
  • Will be required to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment as needed.
  • May occasionally be exposed to wet, humid conditions, inclement weather, and extreme temperatures.
  • May, on rare occasions, be exposed to oils, airborne particles, vibration, and the risk of electric shock.
  • May, on rare occasions, be required to work near moving mechanical parts and in a high dangerous place.
