Monod Bio is a pioneer company in the design of de novo protein biosensors. Our innovative biosensor platform technology takes advantage of the most recent advances in computational protein engineering to create highly modular biosensing nano-switches that enable rapid, sensitive, and inexpensive analytical assays. Our visionary founding team and state-of-the-art technology position Monod Bio at the forefront of molecular reporter and biosensor innovation, and we welcome exceptional individuals to join us in this journey.

Monod Bio is looking for a Scientist in protein screening and manufacturing. The selected candidate will independently spearhead a dedicated team through projects focusing on screening, lead identification and production of computationally designed de novo proteins. This position requires an extensive experience in protein biochemistry, protein expression and purification methods in bacterial systems and quality control of the resulting protein reagents. The ideal candidate will be responsible to interface with internal and external stakeholders to understand the deliverables of each project, and independently plan timelines, required human and material resources, execution, and quality assessment of the delivered product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a dedicated team to execute research projects in screening, lead identification and production of computationally designed de novo proteins.
  • Execute an established pipeline for protein binder lead identification comprising DNA assembly, bacterial transformation, protein expression, functional screening, protein production in bacterial systems, data analysis and quality control.
  • Development and improvement of experimental SOPs.
  • Communication of data reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supervise technical staff including setting objectives and development plans, performance management, career development, training, and mentoring.
  • Run a high-throughput pipeline of DNA assembly from synthetic gene fragments using Golden Gate.
  • Perform 96-well plate format protein expression screening using bacterial expression.
  • Perform functional binding studies using Biolayer Interferometry.
  • Oversee protein manufacturing process in bacterial systems, including NiNTA affinity chromatography and size exclusion chromatography.
  • Protein quality control and biophysical characterization (SEC-MALS, Circular Dichroism, and Thermostability analyses).
  • Collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams, sharing insights, troubleshooting issues, and driving projects forward.
  • Keep meticulous records of experimental procedures, protocols, and results, employing Benchling for digital documentation. Assemble data packages and maintain quality control documentation for final product delivery.
  • Maintain a detailed inventory of physical materials and reagents.
  • Other duties and projects as needed or assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, biophysics, analytical chemistry, biology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, or related fields.
  • PhD degree with a protein biochemistry-related project research.
  • 5 years of experience in protein engineering, protein biochemistry, protein production and analysis in academia or industry.
  • Management experience with overseeing the work of multiple technical reports.
  • Proven track record of executing scientific projects timely and successfully.
  • Extensive experience in protein biochemistry techniques including SEC-MALS, Circular Dichroism, Mass Spectrometry and BioLayer Interferometry.
  • Extensive experience in protein purification from bacterial expression using affinity chromatography and size exclusion chromatography techniques.
  • Molecular biology experience in designing and assembling DNA constructs.
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized individual with excellent communication skills capable of coordinating technical activities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively summarize, analyze, and interpret moderately complex analytical data.
  • Ability to document studies and present results timely and clearly.

Physical environment and key requirements:

  • Ability to perform work in both an office and laboratory environment. Will be in proximity to BSL2 labs. Familiarity with biological and chemical hazard handling. Training and equipment will be provided, as necessary.
  • Office mobility and the ability to stand for periods of time as needed is required.
  • Operations happen in moderately loud environments. PPE included by the company.
  • Mild odors from the manufacture of physical specimens and from laboratory work. The environment has been tested and proper engineering protections are in place.
