Job Description for a Substance Abuse Credentialed Counselor in a Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Facility:

Position Title: Substance Abuse Credentialed Counselor Department: Counseling Services Location: Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Facility

Job Summary: The Substance Abuse Credentialed Counselor plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive counseling and support to individuals undergoing treatment for substance use disorders in a residential facility. Working as part of the treatment team, the counselor conducts assessments, develops treatment plans, facilitates individual and group therapy sessions, and offers guidance and education to promote long-term recovery and well-being.

Responsibilities:

Assessment and Treatment Planning: Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate clients' substance use history, mental health status, and treatment needs.
Collaborate with clients to develop personalized treatment plans based on their specific goals, strengths, and challenges.
Continually reassess clients' progress and modify treatment plans as necessary, in consultation with the treatment team.

Individual and Group Counseling: Facilitate individual counseling sessions to address clients' unique needs, concerns, and challenges related to substance use and recovery.
Lead group therapy sessions, utilizing evidence-based practices and therapeutic modalities to address topics such as relapse prevention, coping skills, and emotional regulation.
Create a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their experiences, develop insight, and enhance motivation for change.

Education and Support: Provide psychoeducation to clients and their families on addiction, recovery, coping strategies, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Offer support and guidance to clients in developing and maintaining relapse prevention plans, including identifying triggers and building healthy coping mechanisms.
Collaborate with clients to address co-occurring disorders and facilitate referrals for additional mental health services if needed.

Documentation and Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, including assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
Adhere to confidentiality guidelines and legal requirements when documenting client interactions and treatment-related information.
Complete all required documentation in a timely manner and ensure compliance with facility policies and regulatory standards.

Collaboration and Teamwork:Collaborate with the interdisciplinary treatment team, including medical professionals, counselors, and support staff, to ensure coordinated and integrated care for clients.
Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and treatment planning sessions to contribute insights and perspectives regarding clients' progress and needs.
Engage in ongoing professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills in substance abuse treatment.

Qualifications:

  • Appropriate state-recognized credential as a Substance Abuse Counselor (e.g., Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, etc.).
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing counseling services to individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Strong knowledge of addiction, recovery models, evidence-based treatment modalities, and relapse prevention strategies.
  • Familiarity with assessment tools and standardized instruments used in substance abuse treatment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build therapeutic relationships.
  • Strong documentation and recordkeeping abilities, ensuring accuracy and adherence to legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.

The Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for creating a personalized continuing care plan for each resident during treatment up to the discharge process. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • With guidance from supervisor, manage client transition between different Passages facilities (e.g., residential to IOP/PHP).
  • Develop thorough, individual continuing care plans in alignment with treatment team recommendations and client needs
  • Facilitate continuing treatment for discharged residents that may require additional services such as PHP/IOP in distant locations.
  • Coordinate continuing care life planning groups
  • Work with management to ensure clinical guidelines are met
  • Meet with clients regarding individualized continuing care plan and address planning needs and concerns
  • Participate in weekly treatment team meeting to gain needed information from therapist and to communicate important information about clients continuing care plan
  • Attend to resident needs in a friendly and enthusiastic manner as it pertains to continuing care
  • Communicate with outside therapists and other appropriate parties as indicated within the compliance of HIPPA requirements
  • Complete Discharge Planning Progress Notes and Discharge Summary in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualification Guidelines:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of the organizations program
  • Basic knowledge of chemical dependency and psychological disorders
  • Ability to summarize pertinent clinical information via written documentation
  • Must be able to address and prioritize multiple task demands within established time frames
  • Must be flexible in work hours in order to meet facility needs
  • Must maintain self-control in volatile or hostile situations, such as when verbally or physically confronted
  • Must be able to set therapeutic limits and maintain therapeutic distance with clients and maintain therapeutic boundaries with clients during treatment and after discharge
  • Able to maintain confidentiality; prior knowledge of HIPAA preferred
  • Proficient with Word, Outlook, and EMR software.
  • Experience dealing with patients or clients in a hospital or mental healthcare facility preferred

Education / Experience / Credentials:

  • Current, valid certified Substance Abuse Counselor in good standing with accrediting organization required (CCAPP, CADTP, SUDCC ACCBC/CAADE)
  • Associates degree in related discipline required, Bachelor's degree Preferred
  • Experience in a chemical dependency setting preferred
  • Current CPR / 1st Aid certification required
  • Current, valid California Driver License with good driving record (in sole discretion of company) required
  • Experience dealing with patients or clients in a hospital or mental healthcare facility preferred
