JOB SUMMARY

This position manages a multi-faceted summer recreation program with a City community recreation center; provides adequate and responsible supervision of the youth participants; will have good leadership skills and must have the ability to build a rapport with the youth participants, parents, and the summer staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Creates a positive, supportive, and safe learning environment during the Summer Camp Program;

• Assists in implementing activities for the summer camp programs to include arts and crafts, field trips, swimming, and other activities;

• Encourages participation and proper conduct of all campers and ensures the safety of all summer participants, the staff, and the public;

• Builds a positive rapport with the summer youth and staff;

• Assists in inventory and maintaining all equipment and supplies, including set up and clean up on a daily basis for specifically assigned activities and areas;

• Assists in maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of grounds and facilities;

• Provides supervision of youth during activities at or away from the main camp, at lunchtime, at the playground, and to and from and during field trips;

• Provides assistance to any Parks and Recreation Staff as needed;

• Provides a positive customer service attitude and behavior;

• Immediately reports any injuries, accidents, or discipline incidents to the Superintendent, Parks & Recreation Deputy Director, or Parks & Recreation Department Director;

• Attends Day Camp Orientation and training prior to the start of the summer camps;

• Ensures safety procedures, maintains first aid supplies and supplies basic first aid kits;

• Handles emergencies in accordance with the Parks and Recreation processes and procedures; and

• Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

• Must be 18 years of age or older

• Two (2) years of relevant prior experience;

• Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages;

• Ability to coordinate or determine time, place or sequence of operations or activities based on analysis of data or information and may implement and report on operations and activities;

• Ability to provide information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants;

• Ability to handle or use machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment; may service office machines, including adding paper and changing toner; 

• Ability to perform coordinating work involving guidelines and rules, with constant problem-solving;

• Ability to read routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar; 

• Ability to perform specialized technical or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure; and

• Ability to guide others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is considered light in nature and involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: crouching, fingering, handling, kneeling, lifting, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, and visual acuity.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, toxic/caustic chemicals, violence; and is dynamic that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
