The Field Medical Director (FMD) is a key leadership position within the US Medical Affairs organization. This person will be responsible for leading the western region Medical Science Director (MSD) team and will develop the strategic vision to ensure the implementation and development of territory plans, delegation of the appropriate resources to support the Scientific HealthCare Community, and ensuring the team is properly trained to be an effective partner to the field and home office. The individual will be part of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team and will report directly into the Vice President, Medical Affairs. The Field Medical Director will partner with the other Medical Affairs Leadership Team members to develop the appropriate strategy that will direct the overall strategic focus and tactical plans for the Medical Affairs department.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction and support to the development of the Medical Affairs plan in collaboration with the rest of Medical Affairs Leadership Team and Vice President, Medical Affairs.
  • Delivers ongoing and clear communication to the MSD team outlining their responsibilities as well as providing strategic guidance necessary as needed.
  • Acts as the Direct point of contact between the North American Headquarters and the west MSD team.
  • Provides clear guidance to the MSD team about the Medical Affairs strategy and direction for tactical implementation ensuring all activities are conducted in a compliant manner.
  • Provides appropriate coverage to a vacant territory when needed or ensure appropriate coverage in case more than one territory is vacant.
  • As the west FMD, other responsibilities include:
  • Recruits and hires talent in collaboration with Human Resources team.
  • Reviews and updates (as needed) new hire onboarding plans to ensure new hires’ swift acclimation to duties and culture, ensures proper training to new team members is provided including development of training materials.
  • Ensures a clear medical plan is developed and available for each geographical territory in collaboration with the respective MSD.
  • Approves performance evaluation plans for the MSDs and assesses their annual performance evaluations.
  • Identifies education needs for the field team (scientific, job skills, corporate culture) and implements enhancements to current training plans and/or develops and implements new training solutions.
  • Supports Development of career paths for the MSD team.
  • Ensures MSD team demonstrates full compliance with relevant guidance, rules, regulations, and pertinent SOPs; oversees timely dissemination of any new guidance to team.
  • Collaborating with peers to ensure alignment across MSD cross-functional teams within compliance guidance, both, internally and externally, including payers and other external audiences.
  • Provides oversight or participates in special projects and performs other duties as required.
  • Completes all company-based and job-related training as assigned by MTPA within the required timeline.
  • Additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in life sciences (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PharmD)
  • 10-12 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • At least 5 years of MSL/MSD experience. Experience in other scientific roles such as medical research or medical affairs will be a plus.
  • 5 years of experience effectively managing a team, especially field-based medical employees preferred. 
  • Proven competence in clinical therapeutics, drug development, business and market knowledge, and strategic resource management.
  • Thorough understanding of FDA, OIG, ACCME, HIPAA, PhRMA Code and other ethical guidelines.
  • Background in Neurology/Neuroscience, preferred.
  • Strong analytical and evaluative skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and work effectively in a constantly changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrates good networking skills, integrity, collaboration, teamwork, and a strong customer focus.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access), Lotus Notes, and use of customer relationship management (CRM) systems such as Veeva or SteepRock.

  • Location in the Western United States area will be preferred
  • Must be able to travel 50% or more domestically for business and project meetings as required.

The salary range for this position is $155,000 - $264,000. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary may be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state and depending on the role), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.

This position is eligible to participate in our annual Short-Term Incentive (STI) program. Specific information about the plan including eligibility rules and target, will be furnished upon hire.
