MIT is Hiring an Optical Spectroscopy Research Specialist Near Cambridge, MA

OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY RESEARCH SPECIALIST, MIT.nano, to join the Characterization.nano team and assist the user community by offering expert guidance and technical training on utilizing optical microscopy and spectroscopy techniques, including providing classroom and equipment trainings and supporting users with experimental design and data analysis and results interpretation. Will collaborate with scientists and engineers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. The primary responsibility will be to guide students/researchers toward becoming self-sufficient operators of the facility equipment and promote efficient and effective workflows and data analysis protocols.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, or materials science; two years’ experience; hands-on experience with a wide range of optical spectroscopy techniques-including absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, optical profilometry, interferometry, and various modes of optical microscopy (confocal, hyperspectral imaging, polarized, phase contrast, etc.)-with a focus on their applications in various fields such as materials science, chemistry, physics, and beyond; proficiency with experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of optical spectroscopy data; excellent analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills; customer focus; ability to troubleshoot experimental issues and optimize protocols, effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and work independently and manage multiple duties simultaneously; and experience with optical spectroscopy software tools for data analysis. PREFERRED: M.Sc. degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field with a focus on optical spectroscopy or experience with advanced spectroscopic techniques such as time-resolved spectroscopy or nonlinear optical spectroscopy; and knowledge of materials characterization techniques beyond optical spectroscopy, such as atomic force microscopy, inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy, and magnetic properties measurement systems.
