Mississippi Votes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of intergenerational synergy centering and led by young people invested in the progression of Mississippi. We do this through our programming and outreach strategy that empowers young people, encourages civic engagement, and educates communities on voting rights through place-based, grassroots organizing. Our vision is to cultivate a transformative culture of civic engagement throughout the state of Mississippi.

Overview:

The Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator serves as a member of MS Votes’ Policy and Research Team.

The Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator will co-lead research as assigned, on voting related issues unique to Mississippi in comparison to other states to broaden the political ideologies and practices of MS Votes. The Policy and Research Team collects and analyzes information, such as data from public opinion surveys and election results as well as use qualitative and quantitative sources and methodologies to develop and test theories to better our field strategies and legislative agenda(s). 

The sole function of the Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator’s responsibilities are to monitor current events as it pertains to public policy and/or youth organizing (global and domestic), policy decisions and trends and other issues with implications for the political and policy landscape. This person will track all legislation that impacts voters in the state of Mississippi during legislative sessions as well as co-coordinate legislative advocacy days at the Mississippi State Capitol pushing our legislative agenda to expand voting access. 

The Mississippi Votes Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator works collaboratively with the Policy and Research Analyst to:

Responsibilities:

  • Manage local policy teams of passionate student and community leaders
  • Organize local happy hours and community events to create spaces for elected officials to meet young people
  • Cultivate relationships with elected officials throughout the state and successfully advocate for progressive policies 
  • Assist in coordinating major advocacy projects including voter guides, candidate forums, Legislative Advocacy Days at the Capitol, and any additional advocacy focused panels and events
  • Coordinate focus groups with young people across the state to learn about their most pressing issues 
  • Conduct public opinion surveys about voter modernization tools like online voter registration, vote by mail, and other 21st century tools that might expand access to the ballot
  • Maintain rapport with Democracy in Action and One GIRL, One Vote fellows --both past and present
  • Assist with developing MS Votes voting rights campaigns 
  • Lead Public Policy Political Education Academies

Skills and Experience:

  • Must have high level writing skills
  • Must have high level communication skills
  • Must have ethical behavior to be consistent with the standards and the values of MS Votes
  • Must be able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Must have strong working skills and be an advanced user of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, etc).
  • Experienced user of Google Drive, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Ability to be flexible to manage multiple competing tasks and demands while prioritizing 
  • Highly detail oriented, exceptional at prioritizing tasks, and working well under pressure

Position Details:

  • Position is based in Jackson, MS
  • Evenings and weekend hours may be necessary
  • Travel Required
  • Car and driver’s license required for in-state travel

Base salaries at MS Votes begin at $45,000 with experience. Mississippi Votes offers a full healthcare benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and mental healthcare and a monthly $150 allowance for travel and phone.
