Mission Graduates is a nonprofit organization that increases the number of K-12 students in San Francisco who are prepared for and complete a college education. We work towards fulfilling our mission through a wide range of after-school support and services that serve over 4,800 children, youth and families each year. Our vision is to transform the culture of our neighborhoods so that college becomes the expectation for families, rather than the exception.

Program Overview:

The Mission Graduates Bessie Beacon is centered in the heart of the SOMA Community, and is a program model that includes afterschool and summer programming, school-day support, and parent engagement through a collaboration of program partners. For youth, we seek to create a sense of safety, promote mastery of skills, develop supportive relationships, and show growth in youth development and academic measures. In addition, we also work with the whole family to help parents gain the information and practice to be more effective advocates for their children’s education and connect them with resources that support the overall wellness for the family. 

In order to accomplish this work, the Bessie Carmichael Beacon Program draws on the strength and experience of both Mission Graduates Beacon Team and the Bessie School Day Admin team

Position Overview:

This position requires someone passionate about student health and wellness supporting the whole student. As the Wellness Coordinator you would report directly to the Beacon Director at Bessie Carmichael, but will also include regular support during school day hours and in the wellness center. The Wellness Coordinator will also collaborate with day time staff at Bessie Carmichael, including the Principal, Assistant Principal, school social worker, and others. The position would include regular support during school day hours as well as after school. In the school day you will be in the wellness center focused on student support needs , within the after school portion of the day you will be expected to support on site with program day to day and classroom management.

Key Responsibilities & Primary Duties:

Create a safe and supportive restorative environment for students

  • Support the Wellness Center during the school day with daily student check ins 
  • Facilitate disagreements between students and utilize restorative practices
  • Coordinate and initiate lunch time support and program services with other CBO’s and Beacon Wellness Team. 
  • Support with behavior issues and conflict resolution tactics
  • Support student’s individual behavior needs by following student behavior plans ( case by case)
  • Provide supervision and support during lunch and recess as capacity allows
  • Create and maintain a safe and respectful learning environment
  • Keep track of students entering wellness through log
  • respond to wellness thread with teachers and other involved parties
  • Work with Social worker and Admin team for an Action Triage plan when dealing with High Risk situations 
Build cultural and educational bridges with students and their families
  • Develop positive relationships with students, teachers and staff and maintain positive rapport with parents/guardians
  • Maintain communication with Site Coordinator, Beacon Director, and School Social Worker as well as Bessie Admin
  • Attend scheduled Beacon Initiative events and meetings
  • Partner with parents and guardians, school staff, Mission Graduates’ staff, and any other necessary partners to create a cohesive support network for students
Assist in the daily operations of the EDP including supervising youth, administrative tasks & staff development
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and school meetings as needed
  • Attend all team meetings
  • Support both school day and the after school program with Socio-Emotional Learning strategies and school wide systems alignment
  • On site during Summer program, June- Aug to support staff to implement SEL curriculum for students and families
Assist in Afterschool part of day including youth support , class management, expectation setting & activities
  • Support After School Staff, as capacity allows, and be able to fill in for classes when needed
  • Support in student behavior plans in afterschool and supporting leaders if student needs checkin
  • Plan, organize, and lead a variety of activities such as stem and crafts, sports, games
  • Assist in arranging recreational and educational classes, speakers, and field trips;
  • Monitor and supervise participant safety and behavior and communicate with parents/guardians.
  • Set up, prepare, and clean designated areas for activities and events
  • Provide homework assistance, academic enrichment and physical activity, using curriculum units and materials provided by the program.
  • Create an engaging environment that fosters a sense of belonging that kids want to be in
Required Qualifications
  • Strong interest in education and socio-emotional learning
  • Understanding of youth development principle
  • Passion for working with students and youth is a must, as well as a willingness to explore alternative, non-institutional teaching methods
  • Must be able to relate effectively to diverse communities and demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity
  • Bilingual Spanish/English fluency is preferred;
  • TB test clearance mandatory prior to hire;
  • Experience working in communities of color with low-income populations;
  • Candidates must be flexible, well organized and able to take initiative
  • Must have excellent organizational and time management skills

Salary: $22.00-$24.00 per hour
