Job Description:
  • 3 Open Positions PRF#s: FA23003, FA23004, FA23005
The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for providing optimal health care to their assigned athletic teams at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in providing optimal health care to MSU student-athletes as well as other visiting teams. The responsibilities include performing assessments, providing initial care for athletic injuries, and coordinating rehabilitation with team physicians. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is essential in communicating injury information to physicians, sports medicine staff, coaches and strength & conditioning staff. The Assistant Athletic Trainer handles treatment scheduling, oversees medical records, and maintains/updates rehabilitation progress reports. In addition, the athletic trainer prepares student athletes for practices and games by applying taping, special padding and bracing techniques. This position supervises athletic training students and graduate assistant athletic trainers. The incumbent will be required to travel with MSU athletics teams in order to provide the athletic health care deemed necessary with this position. Other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer.
Required Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Athletic Training or related field. (conferred on an official transcript at the time of application.)
OR
  • 5 post-secondary experience as a certified athletic trainer.
  • Board of Certification Credential (BOC) as an Athletic Trainer; Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Licensed or eligible for licensure.
  • Current American Red Cross/American Heart CPR/AED Certification for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Certified athletic training experience in a post-secondary setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Certified athletic training experience in working with collegiate/professional volleyball, wrestling, baseball, track, and/or softball teams
  • Demonstrated competence in the delivery of health care to assigned teams/student athletes through injury prevention, injury assessment and diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and education.
  • Demonstrated competence in emergency care, medical referral, counseling, sports nutrition, performance enhancing drugs and supplements, recognition of sports related injury/illness, strength and conditioning, as well as other various medical conditions.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals, including but not limited to: student athletes, peers, coaches, parents, and physicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to make and implement decisions independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and cooperatively and collaboratively with health care staff members.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear and accurate direction to peers and students.
Other Requirements:
Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
Heavy lifting of water coolers and ice chests is a daily activity with practice and events. We also transport safety equipment daily to practice venues and events for both home and visiting teams. Lifting and transporting of injured student-athletes to remove them from the field or court is performed routinely. Overnight travel is required as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer.
This is a 10-month position(s). Will average 50-60 hours/week; some weeks more and some weeks less. Work time includes days, nights and weekends. Practice coverage occurs early mornings, evenings and weekends. Event coverage occurs nights and weekends with travel required. Some on-call duty associated with position.
Based upon this positions essential functions, it reports to Mankato, up to 7 days a week, and does not have the option of telework. Telework is at the discretion of management and defined and implemented in accordance with HR/LR Policy #1422 (Telework Policy).
