Minnesota Institute of Horn of Africa Studies is Hiring a Remote Grant and Communications Writer

Full job description

Minnesota Institute of Horn of Africa Studies (MNIHAS) has an opening for an experienced Grant and Communications Writer to identify and apply for various grants that meet the organization’s needs and oversee the grant application process from beginning to end including writing proposals and reports, collecting data, and proposing budgets.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

- Research various types of grants available and the criteria to qualify for each

- Research and identify potential grant opportunities

- Develop and write grant proposals, ensuring compliance with all requirements and deadlines

- Collaborate with program staff to gather necessary information for proposals

- Create and maintain a grants calendar to track application deadlines and reporting requirements

- Conduct prospect research to identify new funding sources

- Maintain accurate records of all grant activities, including submissions, awards, and reports

- Manage grants database and tracking system

- Provide support to Executive Director’s major gifts and sponsorship efforts by implementing a program to advance and enhance donor/sponsor relationships

- Meet with potential donors and prepare and strategically deploy the Executive Director to meet with key potential donor

- Create, plan and MNIHAS fundraising events, from program design to event execution, including parlor meetings, small-scale fundraising events and other creative options. The goal is to ensure individual donors are engaged year-round, educated about MNIHAS successes and informed about the impact they are making annually through a calendar of strategic touch points.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

- Proven experience in grant writing, preferably in a nonprofit or academic setting
- Strong research skills to identify funding opportunities and gather relevant data
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write clear, concise, and compelling proposals
- Proficiency in budgeting and financial analysis for grant proposals
- Familiarity with databases and other resources for prospect research
- Ability to edit and proofread written materials for accuracy and clarity
- Experience in program development and evaluation is a plus

- Familiarity working with foundations, state and federal funders, as well as corporate and individual donors is a plus
