Minnesota Department of Transportation is Hiring a Highway Maintenance Worker Near Moorhead, MN

Highway Maintenance Worker | Up to $29.28/hourly

The Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist are the first two levels in our Transportation Specialist Series. These positions are important in our work as they help maintain our roads and are crucial in our efforts to keep friends, family and our communities traveling safely.

The Transportation Associate is a trainee position with a one-year probationary period with a career path to Transportation Generalist. Positions will be trained to perform skilled roadway surface and roadside maintenance activities.

Below are some examples of typical work for both the Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist roles. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.

Function: Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance

  • Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides-installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.
  • Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of the employees and the traveling public.
  • Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc on roadside—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal. Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding.

Function: Snow & Ice

  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment-maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

Transportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications:

The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:

  • One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience)

OR

  • Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

AND

  • Must possess a Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with no air brake restriction. Tanker Endorsement must be obtained by hire date. Must obtain Class A within 6 months. YOU MUST POSSESS AND LIST COMMERICAL DRIVER'S LICENSE WITH NO AIR BRAKE RESTRICTION AND ANY AND ALL ENDORSEMENTS/CERTIFICATIONS ON YOUR RESUME OR APPLICATION.
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Transportation Associate Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Commercial Learner's Permit with no air brake restriction . Tanker Endorsement must be obtained by hire date. You will be trained and must obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
