Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is Hiring a Preschool Teacher, Part-Time Near Minneapolis, MN

Role Summary:
Provide safe, dependable preschool for children (ages 3-5 years) on a year-round basis at assigned recreation sites. Ensure the environment and recreation-based curriculum provides learning experiences to meet each participant’s needs.

Mission Statement:
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board shall permanently preserve, protect, maintain, improve, and enhance its natural resources, parkland, and recreational opportunities for current and future generations. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board exists to provide places and recreation opportunities for all people to gather, celebrate, contemplate, and engage in activities that promote health, well-being, community, and the environment.

Duties:
Leading/planning activities, supervising children and communicating with parents & staff. This position requires an energetic, professional candidate who has the ability and desire to work with diverse group of young children who are a variety of levels socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Experience working with preschool age programming preferred.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensure every registered child is safely supervised and accounted for throughout each day.
  • Plan, organize and develop recreation activities, special events and program curriculum (indoors/outdoors with some educational components) to provide sufficient recreation choices for children between the ages of three and five during the preschool hours, on release days as assigned, and during the summer.
  • Effectively supervise and oversee daily activities.
  • Appropriately and effectively take action on disciplinary issues and/or injuries involving children in a timely manner.
  • Accurately maintain records on children; ensure their private information is protected and secure such information according to recreation guidelines.
  • Promote recreation program and recruit new families through word or mouth and through community events.
  • Attend and actively contribute to staff meetings, in-service training.
  • Develop and facilitate programs and procedures in compliance with MPRB policies and standards.
  • Respond to administrative requests within twenty-four hours or as required.
  • Prepare individualized behavioral and program plans to appropriately support each participant’s development using annual enrollment information and training.
  • Ensure the environment and recreation-based curriculum provides learning experiences to meet each participant’s needs.
  • Effectively complete special assignments on a city-wide basis for the recreation program.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Related Work:

  • May be periodically required to work outside of typical scheduled hours to accomplish requirements for the position.
  • Accurately check attendance sheets and follow-up on related issues if appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and timely communication with parents/guardians.
  • Ensure participants are picked up from programs by an authorized person.
  • Ensure safety of children and take immediate action in any situation deemed unsafe.
  • Ensure all approved medications are administered to participants.
  • Demonstrate creativity and initiative in planning theme weeks and calendars.
  • Coordinate food orders with consideration for dietary needs in compliance with the MPRB Healthy Foods policy.
  • Ensure rooms and activity stations are attractive, clean, set up, and stocked.
  • Work proactively to resolve schedule problems.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and change plans and adapt to circumstances when necessary.
  • Assume responsibility for a classroom in the absence of a staff member.
  • Respond to the individual needs of participants in the program appropriately.
  • Investigate issues and incidents in a timely manner and keep immediate supervisor informed of potential problems or complaints.
  • Accurately complete and distribute detailed reports (accidents, incidents, behavior issues) in a timely manner.
  • Appropriately address issues with participants individually.
  • Monitor all participants records and ensure authorizations and medical information is completed, updated, and secured.
  • Accurately maintain registration and waiting lists.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

Requirements

Schedule:
Part-time schedule of up to 25 hours per week with hours from 8:30 – 2:00 pm,

Monday-Thursday. Hours may vary with summer season

Knowledge of: (position requirements at entry)

  • Current principles and best practices in line with the Minnesota Department of Human Services’ Guidelines for Childcare Workers.
  • Developmental needs of school age children between the ages of 3-5 years old.
  • Current principles and best practices in behavior management skills for preschool age children between the ages of 3-5 years old.

  • Maintain confidentiality in work-related matters.

Training and Experience: (position requirements at entry)

  • H.S Degree. Preferred, but not Required -Two years coursework from an accredited college or university with a major in child/youth development, education, recreation, or closely related field.
  • Professional work experience with preschool-age children (ages 3-5 years old): at least one (1) year.
    –OR–
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
Licensing Requirements:
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required within one (1) month of hire.

Recreation Facility Supervision

Indoor Recreation Center Supervision: Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board: Recreation Department is looking for qualified staff. This is a part time position. All positions are part time and hours may be increased or decreased based on operational needs. Pay rate is $15 – $20/hour depending on qualifications and experience.

Position Summary: Staff are expected to monitor indoor facility areas to ensure safety for scheduled park events, activities, and daily facility users. Communicate with citizens and develop positive relationships with park users by providing assistance and information. Provide facility support with check in, monitoring gym activities and supporting front desk inquiries as needed. Enforce City and MPRB regulations as appropriate. Communicate custodial needs to supervisor.

Compensation: Pay rate is $15.19-20.00/hour depending on qualifications and experience.
This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. This position is not eligible for other benefits.

Hours: Schedule will vary per week but will primarily be 11-40 hours per week in afternoons and evenings (Monday –Sunday).

Job Duties:

  • Ensure a safe environment for all park users by providing education about MPRB policies and procedures.
  • Act immediately to address inappropriate behaviors by contacting appropriate staff or other emergency personnel as necessary.
  • Oversee park supplies on loan to park visitors and properly disinfect them on return.
  • Assist answering questions from the public regarding the facility and programs.
  • Monitor daily park indoor recreation actives within the facility for park visitors during scheduled times.
  • Monitor park activity and attendance; write incident reports and recommendation reports related to park use.
  • Provide and promote recreation opportunities on site and provide information on other park programs.
  • Distribute flyers to promote activities and park programs. Act as facility attendant and greeter for park events.

Qualifications:

  • One year experience involving extensive interaction with the public preferred.
  • Must pass background check.
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with a diverse community using courtesy, tact, and good judgement.
  • Explain and enforce rules of conduct or other applicable MPRB and City rules and policies.
  • Exercise authority appropriate to various circumstances.
  • Work independently with general supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to perform assigned work independently and responsibly, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and complete physical tasks (lift, carry, pull, etc.)

Seasonal Event Technician

Role Summary: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking seasonal sound and movie technicians to work outdoor events this summer in the parks. Sound and movie technicians support more than 200 concerts at six different park venues and more than 60 movies airing at public parks across the City of Minneapolis. MPRB is hiring seasonal sound technicians seeking professional entry level experience.

Tech responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Set-up and operate small and medium sized outdoor live sound reinforcement systems.
  • Set-up and operate outdoor video projection system.
  • Utilize signal flow and proper gain structure with all necessary microphones, mixing consoles, amplifiers, processors, equalizers, loudspeakers, monitors, snakes, cables, stands and auxiliary equipment.

StreetReach and Community Outreach

Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board: Community Connections and Violence Prevention is looking for qualified staff to be a member of our team. Positions available: Streetreach attendant, Pop up park attendant, Pop up park driver. All positions are temporary or on call and hours may be increased or decreased based on operational needs.

Position Summary:
Promote safe and welcoming environments in Minneapolis parks and neighborhoods. Engage adults and youth in positive interventions, build mentoring relationships with adults and youth with high-risk factors including exposure to neighborhood violence, poverty, or low income, highly mobile or homeless, substance use or abuse, or gang exposure or involvement

Compensation:
Pay rate $17.53/hour: Streetreach attendant and Pop-up Park attendant,
Pay rate $18.55/hour: Pop up park driver–Driver’s license required, driver record will be checked and experience driving a trailer or truck is required.

  • Work in collaboration with the team to response to encampment requests and provide resources as needed
  • Develop mentoring relationships with youth to support and encourage them to build on the strengths and capabilities needed to be positively involved in their communities while preparing to be successful adults.
  • Provide behavior management for youth participating in programs and activities, including while at sports events, at pools, in recreation centers, outdoors, and at other places where youth are spending their out-of-school time.
  • Enforce Park Board policies, procedures, and work/safety rules in a fair and equitable manner
  • Establish and maintain an effective, respectful, and productive work environment and encourage professional development for all employees

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • One year of experience working directly with youth, teens, and families in community settings
  • One year of experience working with homelessness populations
  • Must pass a background check and have driver’s license

  • Work independently with general supervision.
