The Job

In collaboration with and under the direction of the Head of Marketing & Communications, the Public Relations Manager is Mia's primary liaison with local, national, and international media. This role is responsible for spearheading all earned public relations strategies for the museum, with a focus on exhibitions, programs, events, and accessions, both to increase museum visibility and support visitor growth. This role is also responsible for managing sensitive situations internally and externally and for crisis communications.

In this role, you will...

1. Project and Process Management: Ensure the timely execution of project related to media and public relations functions. Write and distribute press releases, announcements, organizational statements, media alerts, and exhibition calendars.

  • Prepare Mia staff and stakeholders for interviews by conducting media training and creating briefing notes.
  • Maintain and update the public relations database, press image files, online Press Room, and other related materials.
  • Track and share press coverage and relevant articles with key staff members and stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate planning, selection, procurement, and production of graphics and photographs with the appropriate departments.
  • Oversee Mia's media monitoring service and list of subscription outlets (newspapers, magazines, etc.).
  • Oversee the public relations budget.

2. Strategy: Develop and implement a public relations and media plan that supports the museum's strategic plan and aligns with institutional priorities and messaging. Promote Mia's exhibitions, programs, and thought leadership across earned media channels. Nurture and protect Mia's reputation as a beloved cultural institution.

  • Maintain high visibility for Mia by identifying and securing press opportunities and coverage.
  • Develop external key messages, talking points, and outreach tactics in support of major initiatives and strategic plan goals.
  • Ensure the image and identity of the museum is externally represented in a consistent manner.
  • Collaborate with divisional and departmental directors in support of cross-functional goals and planning efforts.
  • Continually evaluate and measure PR strategies to ensure they are effective and efficient in supporting goals and growth objectives.
  • Adeptly navigate and manage sensitive, confidential information, and crisis communication.

3. Develop and Maintain External Relationships: Serve as primary contact and liaison for all media outlets. Also serve as external spokesperson for the organization, as needed.

  • Effectively build and cultivate relationships with journalists and press at all levels of contact. Develop story ideas for media coverage. Research media outlets and contacts to identify potential pitch targets. Determine when and how to respond to media requests for information.
  • Manage external public relations agencies and contractors, as needed.
  • Oversee press previews, press trips, interviews, media filming, and photo shoots.
  • Represent the museum at events as required, including on some evenings/weekends.

4. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

Requirements

Required:

* Minimum three to five years of experience in public relations, journalism, museums, or related fields.

* Excellent communication skills: verbal, writing, and editing.

* Self-starter with experience working with media and external sources.

* Flexibility, strong people skills, and ability to meet deadlines and juggle diverse responsibilities.

* Maintain strong cross-functional relationships throughout the organization and with cross functional teams and leadership.

Preferred:

* Public relations experience
