Job Description

Job Title: Nurse Manager

Reports To: Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary: Provides leadership to the nursing care team in order to provide for the patients needs while under medical care in the facility as well as to assess needs, plan, implement and evaluate patients’ nursing care.

Has unit responsibility for operations, hiring, and terminating staff; disciplining and counseling staff and for approving payroll and time records. The Nurse Manager is also responsible for the quality improvement outcomes and activities to which they manage.

Essential Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Coordinates the individualized plans of care establishing nursing interventions and desired patient outcomes in collaboration with staff nurses, physicians, other health care team members, patients and their significant others following an assessment to identify the patient’s needs for nursing care.

2. Assures compliance with all standards of practice, policy and procedures in Pre- op, OR, Post-op, materials management and SPD.

3. Evaluates patient care and actively identifies ways to enhance care.

4. Evaluates the nursing plan of care for patients, revising plans as needed based upon patients current evaluation and status.

5. Responsible for all nursing care in all areas of the facility (Pre-op, OR, Post-op).

Delegates nursing care to team members, as appropriate, based on patient’s needs as well as associate’s qualifications and availability.

6. Follows up as needed to assure that all patient’s needs and quality standards are met.

7. Serves as a resource for technical issues and interpersonal issues to other members of nursing care team as needed.

8. Recognizes and / or responds to emergency situations or other life threatening changes in patient’s condition and alerts proper personnel.

9. Oversees department operations to include determining departmental staffing within budgetary constraints, assuring all departmental employees receive adequate training upon hire or transfer and all department employees attend pertinent and mandatory in-services.

10. Assures that departmental practices comply with all internal policies and collective bargaining agreements.

11. Maintains effective communication with supervisors, leads and other personnel to assure continuity of care and delivery of services.

12. Assesses supply and equipment needs with material management staff and adjust to meet changing unit needs.

13. Assists in the preparation of the annual departmental financial status and prepares financial reports as requested by management.

14. Serves on facility committees and task forces as appropriate and/or requested by administration.

15. Develops, monitors revises and implements department policies and procedures for all departments within the manager’s responsibility.

16. Keeps current with regulations and standards and assures department compliance.

17. Assures all required recordkeeping.

18. Manages and oversees projects and/or program development relative to the department.

19. Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergencies.

20. Complies with all quality assurance, customer focus, infection control, safety and all policies and procedures with the department.

Qualifications:
Current NYS license as a Registered Professional Nurse required. Bachelor of Science
Degree required, Masters preferred.

Experience:
Five (5) years of clinical experience with at least one (1) year of leadership experience required. Clinical experience in the surgical area preferred.

Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Math Ability:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software and surgical information systems.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
