MIDDLESEX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Position: Compass Academy Summer Experience Teacher

Compass Academy is offering a position in the summer program offered to at-risk high school students who are in need of credit recovery and desire to participate in the Compass Academy Summer Experience Program. This course will incorporate personalized learning opportunities, utilizing our current educational programs and staff to support them. Field experiences, hands- on learning, and post- secondary planning will be integrated into the program while simultaneously supporting workplace readiness learning throughout the course of the program.

Position Summary: Performs intermediate professional work providing teaching and/or training services in general instruction or in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, motivating students to develop skills in assigned subject matters, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Compass Academy & Virtual Learning.

Job Type: Full time 

Contract: 11 days (June 12, 2023 - June 30, 2023)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Hourly Rate: $50.00 (4hrs/day)

Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Bachelor’s degree with major concentration in Math, History, Science, Humanities, or other K-12 Virginia License

The preferred candidate will have:

  • Master’s degree and/or Commonwealth of Virginia certification;
  • Relevant classroom experience including secondary instruction;
  • Technological proficiency in the classroom including Edgenuity, Google Educational apps, interactive whiteboards, and electronic grade books;
  •  Growth mindset and willingness to pursue ongoing professional development;
  •  Experience with coaching and/or mentorship;
  •  Strong communication and collaboration skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Relating positively to high school students, with particular emphasis on the needs of diverse learners including at risk and high achieving learners; provide an empowering student-centered learning environment that is equitable, inclusive, respectful, and supportive; assesses and evaluates needs of students; provides instruction in individual or group sessions; establishes and maintains standards of behavior.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with differentiated learning instruction; plan and deliver effective lessons that meet the individual needs, interests and abilities of students while utilizing technology to facilitate instruction
  • Teaches and assesses a broad range of subject or specialized subject matter specific in state law and administrative regulation and procedures of the school system; motivates students to achieve maximum potential with a focus in creative thinking, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship 
  • Creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning; communicating objectives effectively to students; establishing high expectations for academic success and classroom behavior; employing a variety of instructional techniques and blended learning strategies; and assessing the accomplishments of students on a regular basis 
  • Communicating professionally and effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and parents
  • Participating in professional learning sessions and field experience trips with
    students
  • Encourages students to think independently, develop and express original ideas. Evaluates students' progress; maintains appropriate records; prepares progress reports. Communicates with students, student counselors and parents through conferences and other means 
  • Adapts teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students; translates lesson plans into learning experience
  • Formulates and implements behavior modification for students who need supports
  • Performs related tasks as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of primary, elementary, middle, high school or special education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school system rules, regulations and procedures; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents.

Education and Experience:

Previous teaching experience is preferred. Bachelor's degree with coursework in assigned specialty area, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking and occasionally requires sitting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
