Mid-State Industrial Maintenance is Hiring an Electrical Relay Technician Near Lakeland, FL

Job Summary
This is a responsible, skilled, technical position in the installation, testing, operation, and maintenance of protective relays, SCADA, fiber optic and related substation equipment. Reports to the Substation Foreman / Substation Supervisor.
Essential Duties
Tests, calibrates, and installs protective relays: To perform relay testing, calibration and installation requires transporting of test equipment up to 80 pounds, to and from substation by van or truck, lifting and carrying the test equipment to and from substation control houses and setting the equipment up on a portable table approximately 36 inches high. Requires manual dexterity in the use of hand power tools and electrical test equipment. Also requires the ability to distinguish colors on color coded wires.
Installs, checks-out and trouble-shoots control wiring and analyzes Substation equipment malfunctions: Reads and works from detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. Must have the ability to visually examine evidence of malfunctions, visually review SCADA logger reports and maintenance records to determine the cause of equipment failures or malfunctions. In the event of a system malfunction, may be called at home to respond to the situation at any hour, must assess the situation and use judgement to manually make appropriate repairs as quickly as possible to meet service demands. Communicates clearly and courteously to assist others.
Prepares reports, keeps records and up-dates drawings: Prepares handwritten investigation reports on equipment failures and system mis-operations. Keep accurate relay test reports and maintenance records of substation equipment. Requires manual dexterity to use desktop and laptop computer equipment in running automated relay tests.
Installs, tests and maintains Substation equipment, electrical and mechanical: Operates and conducts tests with complex test equipment of transformers, 230KV, 69KV and 15KV (oil, vacuum and gas) circuit breakers, 15KV substation and distribution class voltage regulators, single phase and three phase reclosers and any motor-operated and/or manually-operated 15KV, 69KV, and 230KV switches used in the transmission and distribution of electric power.
Performs Substation and Distribution switching and electric utility operations: Required to follow switching orders issued by System Control Center, requiring the operation, locking-out and tagging of Transmission and Distribution substation circuit breakers, gang-operated switches, and hook-disconnects. Requires physical agility and strength to perform switching orders in established procedures. Must be visually and audibly alert to detect hazards. Safety equipment issued includes safety manual, hard hat, hi-voltage rubber gloves, safety glasses, earplugs.

Physical Requirements / Working Environment .
  • This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work vary (Monday-Sunday with some overnight work) and overtime is frequently required.
  • Working environment is often in harsh elements (hot/humid and/or cold temperatures, rain, etc.) Industrial environments often have exposure to hazardous chemicals, moving heavy equipment, and other safety-sensitive hazards/risks. Must always be alert and able to safely perform the essential duties of the job without risking harm to oneself or others.
