Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, the Director of Systems and 9-12 Curriculum plays an essential role in the implementation and development of 9-12 curriculum as well as student and staff support systems throughout the District. The director is responsible for the successful design, development, and implementation of curriculum, working with teachers, parents, community members and other staff to analyze, assess, and improve educational programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee the K-12 MTSS framework that supports the whole student.
  • Provide guidance to school leadership teams to ensure that MTSS strategies and interventions are in place to support student achievement.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Curriculum Instruction Council (CIC) and parents, community members, teachers or students who desire to propose a change in instruction, curriculum, grading or any system with is related to the instruction of students.
  • Provide leadership and steer district-wide curriculum initiatives to all 9-12 regular education programs, effectively involving administrators and staff in workshops, seminars, program evaluation, and community presentations.
  • Work closely with the Director of Professional Development and K-8 Curriculum to ensure alignment and to determine resource allocation for all curriculum and professional development activities
  • Direct and coordinate all assigned curriculum teams as they work to develop new educational programs, student assessments, and instructional techniques which will ensure compatibility with District Student Exit Outcomes and the State Core Curriculum and Content Standards.
  • Facilitate the organization, development and approval of all 9-12 curriculum materials which include textbooks, workbooks, hands on material, software and all other materials used by teachers to impart the curriculum.
  • Work closely with principals, other school administrators, and teachers to improve, evaluate, and assess current curricula and recommend new curriculums.
  • Interpret state and local testing data relative to the achievement in all program areas and present findings and recommendations to the school community and community-at-large.
  • Assist with the coordination of the District’s summer educational programs.
  • Provide guidance to the new teacher orientation and induction programs.
  • Prepare curriculum, instruction and professional development budgets for assigned grade and specialty areas.
  • Coordinate, write, and monitor state and federal grants, including Title II and Title III.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Handbook.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working and leading in a 9-12 building.
  • Valid Michigan Administrator Certificate.
  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership.
  • Coursework in school law, finance, administration/leadership, assessment and research.
  • Continuous learning through leadership organizations, educational publications, conference experience, and test analysis.
  • Previous teaching experience and progressively responsible experience in public school administration and management including curriculum and standards.
  • Proficient computer and document creation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to problem solve, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
