Position Details

JOB TITLE: Custodian

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, year-round, non-exempt

SUPERVISES: None

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

POSITION SUMMARY:

The employee will perform a variety of Custodial tasks, which will involve daily cleaning,

sanitizing, disinfecting, and set-up for special events

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, dusting, and moving

furniture to ensure cleanliness.

2. Completing regular and periodic cleaning tasks in all rooms, including disinfecting rest

rooms.

3. Periodically replacing rest room supplies, and trash removal

4. Perform a variety of labor tasks such as shoveling snow and ice from walkways,

playground equipment, cutting grass, grounds maintenance and general painting.

5. May be asked to replace light bulbs and change filters.

6. Must hold and maintain current CPI certification in verbal de-escalation and physical

restraint (training provided by the school district).

7. Planning and implementing routine fire alarm and hazardous weather drills and building

evacuations.

8. Demonstrates good communication skills with parents and professionalism in a variety of

situations.

9. Other related duties as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

1. Responsible for the cleanliness of the Bahweting School under supervision of the

Superintendent.

2. Must contact outside contractors and vendors as needed.

3. Employee should keep a log of work performed on a daily basis.

CONTACTS:

Daily contact with School Personnel, students, Administrator and Outside Vendors/Contractors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Previous experience in custodial or janitorial required.

3. The ability to organize and follow a cleaning routine.

4. Must be able to work with cleaning solvents and dusty environments.

5. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, and carry 40 lbs.

6. Previous experience in working in schools and/or educational settings.

7. Must be knowledgeable of school safety codes and regulations.

8. Knowledge of Tribal Sanitation/Hazardous Materials Policy beneficial.

9. Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license.

10. Must be flexible with shifts and days off.

11. Current First Aid certification or willing to be trained.

12. Must be dependable, conscientious, and able to work independently.

13. Must be able to work with composure under stressful conditions.

14. Must complete and pass a criminal history background check according to applicable

laws and school board policies.

15. Must comply with all rules and regulations pertaining to safety.

16. Must be able to speak English (speak, read, write, and comprehend).

WORKING CONDITIONS/SAFETY HAZARDS:

1. Working conditions will vary, indoors and outdoors.

2. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.

3. Frequent standing and walking.

4. Moderate exposure to weather.

5. Occasional exposure to electricity, working on ladders and other safety hazards.

6. Interaction with a wide variety of students, including those with special needs.

7. Must be confidential with staff and student issues.

8. May be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
