What You’ll Do
The School Counselor will provide counseling and guidance services to students. The school counselor will impart individual and group counseling, classroom guidance, activities, parent consultation, registration of new students, academic planning and credit evaluation. The School Counselor will promote and enhance student learning through academic development and personal/social development. A successful Social Counselor will utilize various strategies, activities, delivery methods, and resources to promote student development while respecting and affirming student identities and needs.
Job Requirements
Certified Michigan School Counselor
Bachelor’s degree in Guidance and/or School Counseling (Masters degree preferred)
A minimum of three years of teaching, counseling, or other experience working with children grades K-12 is highly preferred
Experience using culturally affirming practices, working with diverse communities, and strong relationship-building skills to understand students, families, and communities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Plan a balanced and comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program that includes guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support components
Manage program personnel and or other program resources
Advance and support the school developmental guidance and counseling program, operating with the highest ethical and professional standards with school personnel, parents, students, and the community
Conduct and coordinate structured group lessons to deliver guidance curriculum effectively
Accurately and without bias guide individual and groups of students and parents to plan, monitor, and manage the student’s own personal and social development
Consult with school personnel, parents, and other community members to promote understanding of student development, individual behavior, the student’s environment, and human relationships.
Adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards related to assessment
With the assistance of school personnel, interpret standardized tests results and other assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and plans
