Description

The Upward Bound Summer Program is a six-week college preparatory program that gives Upward Bound students a taste of the college experience. Held from mid-June to the beginning of August, participants take college-style classes at a local university, attend field trips to local colleges and universities, and participate in related cultural events. Participants receive instruction in reading, composition, foreign language, math and laboratory science. In addition, they are offered guidance in educational and career opportunities, as well as exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote leadership, cultural awareness, and self-confidence.

This program runs from July 1st through August 9th. Teachers will start one week earlier, on Monday, June 24th. This is a part-time temporary position.

Hours per week will depend on how many classes you agree to teach. Classes are an hour long, there are 4 classes per day.

The Upward Bound Summer Program High School Teacher will plan, prepare, and deliver quality instruction to support the academic growth of students during the Upward Bound six-week Summer Program. Teachers will need experience and expertise in one of the following areas: reading/literature, composition, math (Algebra II, geometry, or data analysis and statistics), laboratory science, or foreign language. Teachers can teach 1 - 3 classes per day and will receive paid time for grading and planning.

  • Implement effective teaching practices to facilitate student academic achievement, behavior management, and social skills.
  • Knowledge of socioeconomic conditions and barriers to education that students face in attaining post-secondary education.
  • Instruct students in a classroom setting.
  • Set clear short-term and long-term goals to drive instruction.
  • Maintain effective supervision and discipline in the classroom.
  • Plan and provide clear, differentiated, and intentionally focused instruction based on subject matter content, and evidence-based practices.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs for the purpose of promoting individual achievement.
  • Consistently foster and manage a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Track and use multiple student data elements to assess student progress, modify instruction, and improve student learning.
  • Provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and conform to work hours specified under the position’s contract/agreement.
  • Maintain the Summer Program’s management policies and procedures (e.g., attendance, behavior, etc.) and report to the Youth Education Program Manager when necessary.
  • Use feedback to make productive changes in performance.
  • Abide by all state and federally mandated reporting requirements pertaining to sexual or physical abuse and neglect.

We are seeking teachers qualified in at least one of the following subjects:

  • Math (Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, etc)
  • Science (Biology, Geology, Computer Science, etc)
  • English (Literature, Poetry, Creative Writing, etc)
  • Languages (Spanish, French, ASL, etc)
  • Electives (Music, Art, PE, Drama, etc)

Schedule: Either Mon & Wed, or Tue & Thu, or Mon - Thu. 9am - 3pm, around 12 - 24 hours/week

Compensation: $40/hour

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • Washington State Teaching Credential with the proper content-area endorsement
  • Experience teaching in specific content at the high school level
  • Knowledge of and experience with Common Core Standards
  • Experience designing engaging curriculum and assessments.
  • Experience working with underserved, underrepresented student populations.
  • A strong ethical base and self-awareness
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards for student achievement.
  • Humility, sense of humor, and commitment to MDC’s UB/UBMS Summer Program goals and community
